I was always surprised it never happened, what with Dermot doing a lot of TV work for RTÉ

I can't imagine their audience overlaps much with whoever 2FM target these days.

They had a big competition for a robot lawnmower and daily prizes of Husqvarna vouchers - the songs were from the 90s - middle aged people like myself are their audience.

At this moment in time they are "too old" for 2fm but I do think that as the listenership of 2fm gets lower and lower, I can see RTE moving 2fm in a different direction in the future in a post Dan Healy and Paul Russell era. Now I don't think it will be the boards wet dream of RTE gold on FM but rather a classic RTE fudge of something like the "2009/2013 John McMahon era" of 2fm, so in such a scenario D&D might well be the kind of hosts you'd here on this possible fantasy 2fm, trying to appeal to the 90s/00s/10a generation. A bit like the way Today FM have gone in recent months under new management and bosses

Dermot must be freelance because he was foing a show on RTE with Doireann over Xmas. Maybe he'll be like Ray D'Arcy pre-2015 a TV-only man with RTE?

I reckon that if Tony Fenton hadn't had to leave Today FM due to his poor health then D&D would have been on 2FM a good while ago. TF is a big loss to Irish radio I reckon.

2fm is a steaming hot pile of sh#te.

anyone who can listen to that carl Mullan, Donnacha or Doireann and thinks they’re remotely funny would need to get a grip!

Dan Healy had actually originally spoken to Dermot Whelan about being part of breakfast republic with Bernard O'Shea and Jennifer Maguire as the idea was to basically do the TV show on the radio (presumably had he said yes, Keith Walsh wouldn't have been involved) Luckily Whelan stayed with Communicorp as both the TV and radio show has since died and Bernard O'Shea and Keith Walsh are no longer employed by RTE at all afaik

Dan Healy was also the CEO of 98FM when Dermot and Dave started there in 2002/3

I would have loved Dermot Whelan to have in some way been part of The 2FM Breakfast Show.

If I had been in charge of 2FM sometime in the late 00s I would definitely have offered them a show

Is there any presenter on 2FM who hasn't a big D4 accent, worst of them all is Lottie Ryan who is only there because of who her oul fella was.

Wouldn't be going out of my way to listen to the 2 lads but they are the best of a bad lot if I'm in the car at that time of the morning.

Genuine question: has any presenter since Gerry Ryan had serious success on 2FM?

I can’t see what would attract someone to work there outside of money. If Dermot and Dave got offered a show there, I think they would need a financial offer they couldn’t refuse.

According to the Independent today, “Bauer Media’s Today FM is celebrating after it recorded a market share of 9.2pc, which is its highest in over a decade. This compares to RTÉ’s 2FM at 5.8pc.”

Based on that alone, they would be right to stay at Today FM

They wont, they want a young profile and not mid 40 dads (not sure why theyve zamperelli as shes mid 40's but hey they think shes a name), - they have the younger version of them at 3- the 2 Johnnies

    Donncha O'Callaghan

    Carl Mullan (normal Dublin accent)

    Mo K (ditto)

    The 2 Johnnies

    Tara Kumar

    Diarmuid O'Brien

    Laura Fox

    JJ

    Aindriu de Paor

    Cormac Battle

None of them have what I would consider remotely approaching a D4 accent.

Well that's a good point, but I think in the late 00s/early 10s they were a missed opportunity for 2FM.

I think Dermot & Bernard together would have been interesting.

I think the Ryan Tubridy breakfast show was somewhat successful

Rte 2 have the two johniees isn’t that enough torture to put on any listener.

Not exactly a radio question but do you think Dermot will do any more TV work anytime soon? He did a show not too long ago with Doireann Garrihy.
