Is this protective covering on head unit?

Recently picked up a 141 Honda Vezel. So far so good. It's an import so there's a bit of brushing up on my Japanese needed... Or Google Translate which has been dead handy.

But here's a thing, the head unit looks as though it has a protective film over, like you see on a new phone.

It this pic you can kinda see that the screen is a little "milky" looking in comparison to the climate control below it...

So I had a little go at lifting off what I think is a protective covering but I didn't go too far as it wasn't peeling away as I expected. It feels a little more sticky than the static attached one you get on phones, bottom right corner here...

Should I just go for it and rip it like a plaster or hold the horses it might be a permanent protective covering?

It's an aftermarket head unit, looks more permanent like a phone screen protector than typical temporary protective covering. Worst case it will leave an adhesive type finish that you will need to wipe away

I don't think it's after market and dealer says it's original and advised against changing it so gonna give it a few weeks.

Oddly it looks more like an after market one than an after market one does. He had 2 Vezels and one had a new head unit it and it looked a better fit.

One bogey is the radio but I'm more podcasts, Internet radio and Spotify these days but I'd still like a speaky-de-English display. But gonna go with dealers advice for now.

I'll probably leave the plastic for now and ask the dealer about it the next time I'm going by.

Weren't Gathers the oem radios in Japanese Hondas? I'd say it's the screen protective cover that came on it when it was new maybe after years of been on the screen it's harder to remove

There's a regular ad on Donedeal for a jailbreak type fix for Japanese radios.

NSAman you are one of the reasons the forum is almost dead.

Seeing this in motors forum is such a shame. I guess you find it funny for some od reason...

I think you’d be mad not to change that radio. Its all in Japanese and are usually cumbersome to use especially on the move. And they only have one or two Irish stations.

Would you not just swap it out for a Pioneer unit or something? Something with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto

Unless it does car functions I’d 100% be replacing it and getting CarPlay etc.

Well I'm all for changing it. The garage can arrange it too for €350 (that's supply and fit, I wouldn't do it myself). I don't know if that's a good price.

However the salesman recommends living with it for a few months to see if we find it necessary as he says they're a superior unit. Gotta say me and my partner don't get his love for it at the moment.

Is €350 a good price? Would Sat nav etc work on it and would my steering wheel controls work? I got a pioneer replacement in my last car but it was at th e expense of column controls.

Is there a company that someone would recommend? I Googled it before and it was a bit of a mine field as some struck me as more reputable than others.

If whatever he’s offering is inferior to a Japanese language system that’s largely unusable then it’s probably not great. Get a model number of what they’re proposing to fit.

as an aside, did the dealer confirm that the car has an immobiliser fitted?
