Advice for Buying a small Diesel car

Hi Everyone,

I’m from Cork but living in Dublin so do a decent bit of Driving on the m50 and m7. I have a 2003 1.4 VW polo diesel, great car, very cheap to run and I’d like to buy something similar again, small diesel between 1.4 - 1.6 .I can stretch up to 10000 euro to buy, but the less the better. I was considering buying a Dacia duster or Sandero, both 1.5 diesel . Seems relatively good value, I’ve seen a few with low enough milage.Could someone offer some advice on this or suggest any alternatives? Thanks In advance.

I'd definitely go for a duster over a sandero stepway if your not too bothered about having all of the bells and whistles that some of the other bigger brands have. I've seen sandero stepways do good mileage but the ones I've seen always have things like buttons peeling/breaking off and random things like steering wheel controls and horns not working and window motors etc going.

Get a new Duster on finance, used prices are crazy high. €11k for an 8 year old one that cost €18000 new 8 years ago.

They’ve gone up a bit since then, but paying that sort of money for a 2014 is bonkers.

Thanks for the replies lads. Do you think the Duster is reliable? and the the fuel economy is decent enough?

It’s got proven Renault mechanicals, so no major issue. The early Dusters did have rust issues and they were clearly built to a price.

A Megane like this would be a way more pleasant, more comfortable, quieter, safer, better equipped car

I had one of these Meganes, great car, very reliable and cheap to run never needed anything the only thing though was the interior pieces started to fall apart after 100k kms and there was lots of rattles and noises as well as the plastics were quite cheap. But, for that money I think it's the best option.

Hyundai i20 or ix20 and Kia Rio 1.4 diesels from 2011 on.
