Where do I go to get an engineer's report to say the repairs done on a car are good and it is safe to drive on the road.

I had a tip with the car in January and the assessor wanted to write the car off but said I could repair it if I paid for it myself.

Strange situation - did they write the car off and let you buy it back to repair it yourself?

The insurer allowed my dad to do the same with his car. Because it was old, rear bumper and tailgate damage would have meant an economic writeoff.

They paid the value of the car, but let him keep it to repair. But AFAIK to keep paperwork and fees to a minimum, they never actually logged the car as a writeoff on the database. (now I could be remembering that part wrong, but he got the car's value and kept it, as opposed to being forced to scrap it)

When the guy rang me about the report, he went through it with me. The insurance would not pay for new parts but I could get second-hand parts and pay for the repairs myself and he had no problem himself if I wanted to repair it using my own money

So I told them I would repair the car as it was already in the garage and they agreed the car didn't need to be written off.

All the needed replace was a bumper and a wing and left headlight.

It even went though the NCT only for bushing needed replacing.

So why exactly do you need an engineers report?

You can find local Motor Engineers via the search on this page.

Because AA INSURANCE underwriter what's one off an engineer to say it it safe to drive on the road.

I even got a letter off the body shop that repaired the car and that was no good.

AA have moved me from full comp to third party fire and theft till they get a report

When an insurer writes off a car Cat C or Cat D (repairable), they will want an engineer's report to ensure it is safe to go back on the road and insurable. It will also describe the extent of the repairs done to establish a valuation for any subsequent claim

Surely the nct cert would be good enough. I have a retest on friday

I find it strange that they are looking for an Engineer's report on the car considering they didn't mark it as a "Write Off" though. If the NCT certificate was good enough, surely the Insurance assessor would have told you.

As another poster mentioned, there are IAEA motor engineers available through the link posted above. At least that will get them off your back once you have done it 🙂

Not even close to acceptable for the reasons I outlined above. Motor Engineers are qualified to a higher standard.

    Update

The car passed the report with flying colours. The assessor could not believe how well the handles for a car with over 360,000km on the car
