Secondhand Diesel

    Hi folks,

Starting a new job shortly that will result in a significant leap in my mileage per annum.

We currently have two petrol cars in the driveway so looking at moving at least one of them on and getting a diesel.

The new gig includes a nice pay rise but sweet lord the price of used cars has gone bananas since I last looked!

I would like a nice looking (in the eye of the beholder I appreciate) saloon car with the best possible MPG. The newer the better but I know I will be going well back the years.

Am I stark raving mad to think I could land something for €10k to €12k that hasn't done huge mileage?

What size of engine do you want? This might be somewhat underpowered but reasonable mileage:

Your daily mileage? who is paying for fuel? Might be worth considering a EV, fuel savings could cover repayments.

I don't see a point in splashing out say €10,000 to save around 20-30% a week on fuel if you have a perfectly good petrol car to be honest. It would take you years to recoup the €10,000 outlay on the savings made on fuel.

If you just want to get a new car then fine.

Mileage will vary but looking at minimum 600km a week up to 800km.

Fuel is out of my own pocket. Am a ways out in the sticks and while I might look at EV next time, it's not a consideration for now.

Would I squeeze a 3 series F30 into that budget? Thats a long the lines I would be looking

Very fair point but was looking to upgrade shortly anyway. More and more niggly bits going awry on my current car

Ah yeah, fair enough so if it's getting a few issues and you were thinking of upgrading soon enough then you might as well!

Just you see some people forking out thousands just to get a lower tax bracket or to get a little better mpg when in reality it would take years to see the savings.

Nope haven't driven myself but have heard that they're very comfortable cars. The 1.6 would be fine for me too tbh, I just know some people like a big engine for long distances but 1.6 might save you a bit in insurance/fuel. Big heavy car though so acceleration wouldn't be out of this world with that unit (I imagine)

You'd save approx. €6-800 p/y switching to a diesel, maybe a little more. But don't switch for that reason alone, to a car which may also be troublesome. There are few scenarios where a newer car makes pure financial sense (with the exception of a new electric doing high mileage, probably), so don't try to justify a new car on fuel savings alone, you're only kidding yourself. Just accept that cars are expensive, and that you like a newer car, and you'll sleep much easier!

I would also say 1.6 engine on such a big car would be my concern. We had a different family car not as heavy as that in 1.6 diesel engine and it used more fuel than my much bigger and older 1.9 diesel engine car.

It would also depend on the type of the roads you would be driving. If you have a lot of motorway I would not go for anything less than 1.9 diesel engine.
