Is it possible to seed a new lawn in June/July?

We were planning on getting someone in to begin groundworks around our house, part of that is to create a new lawn. If he starts soon then we'll probably be ready to sow in June or July. We really want a lawn this summer but I'm not sure if it's practical, or too late to sow.

    Any advice?

Pay attention to how fast the particular seed you plan to use grows, but yes should be absolutely fine. I sowed a lawn in June and it came up great. In terms of usage, I wouldn't be walking around on top of a new lawn too often for a while though.. give the grass a chance to settle in.

Great thanks. Should I be looking for a fast or slow growing grass?

We were hoping to play soccer etc. but I guess we shouldn't until the following spring perhaps?

The issue with summer planting is the heat/sun. You'll have to keep the grass seed wet, and that means constant watering which may not be practical, and definitely not a good use of drinking water.

No chance of you being able to play football on it this year

Yea good point, though the previous poster seemed to have good results in June. I saw on other websites that you can use the lawn after 3 weeks, so if we sow in June we could use it in July right? Or is it how soccer would just be too rough? Perhaps we can still walk on it though.

The most important thing is to not let it dry out.

Walking carefully on it should be no problem, but any dragging or skidding will just tear it up if you don't wait until the roots have formed a strong interconnected mat.

Ask your supplier for no.3 grass seed, it's mostly ryegrass which is best for games/ traffic etc.

Sowing in june/july is fine as long as there isn't a prolonged dry spell forecast
