7 seater car hire - Dublin Airport

Hi Folks

I have family of 6 visiting Ireland for a fortnight this summer. They need to hire a 7 seat vehicle to fit everyone in, but the options and availability online seem very limited, or very expensive (6000 euro at least) where they find availability online. Anyone know of any companies who perhaps specialize in larger vehicle hire in Dublin area?

If you could find a Taxi Driver with a minivan who was going on holidays the exact same period of time it might work but sorry don't know anyone that hires out these vehicles.

I'm looking at that as an option. I thought 9k was an expensive quote! I'll buy a car, then sell it, and they can give me the 16k lol!

It's a consideration for sure! I remember when I was little, we had 4 crammed in the back of a cortina, possibly even a cushion put over the hand brake! Can't do that nowadays!

Insurance would likely be prohibitive unless their current is willing to cover them from the word go. Also, getting hold of a valid disc will be fun given that you have no fixed abode here.

Even five seaters are insane for long term rentals this summer.

My great uncle used to buy and re-sell back in the 90s when coming over from the US for prolonged periods. Insurance was probably easier to work out, or at least fudge, in those days

you'd really need someone on this side willing to do the legwork on the buy/sell and insurance (does OpenDrive cover foreign license-holders?)

Remember similar but the ratio in our Cortina was 5 at the back 3 at the front with the cushion covered hand break. The thing nearly exploded trying to drag the 8 of us up the Connor Pass one summer.

I often wondered if you could make a business out of travel solutions for families at airports short term rental of buggies, car seats, people carriers etc.

Would booking transport with a driver work out cheaper. Probably not what your guests are looking for. The idea of buying a car short term and transferring insurance seems to be undoable like a lot of things these days.

There's a 14 day cooling off period on online sales. Buy a car online drive for 13 days and return it, you'll loose something for the mileage added but not as much as 2 weeks car hire or hiring mini buses.

Rental prices are INSANE ... globally right now, it's not just Ireland.

So glad I sorted out my car rental last December for this summer, got a good deal (still relatively expensive) but the same car is 4x the price now!!!

Buy and sell probably isn't an option any more. Insurance companies have punitive charges built in when you cancel a policy early in the first year. You'd be lucky to get half the (annual) premium back after a couple of months. After one year, most of them give you a pro rata refund with an admin charge but if you cancel in the first year, they will totally screw you.

We / they are hiring a minibus for around 100 Stg a week, with an extra 20 Stg maybe for the insurance per day. Might not be the most glamorous minibus, but it'll work! Now, we have to get the minibus to Dublin airport ourselves, etc, and do the drop off too. So, yeah there is a bit of leg work for family on this side, but I would have bought a vehicle if needed. There is some serious gouging going on in the car rental market at the moment.
