What are your choices for some cheap 22 for a day plinking or target shooting on the range.

Also is it just me or does the federal bulk 525 rounds seem hotter then they used to be they are much louder in my pistol with a sound mod then my last batch i got last year.

The ammo you want/require largely depends on the level of accuracy and the type of shooting you want to do plus does your rifle like it.

Even for general plinking around you still need a certain level of accuracy otherwise there is little enjoyment in the activity. For general plinking cheap and cheerful (if accurate enough in your rifle) should/would be fine.

It’s hard to beat CCI SV at €5.50 a box (possibly cheaper in bulk buy), Fiocchi costs the same and GECO SA is €6.50 a box.

Personally I wouldn’t let Remmy/Federal/S&B inside my front door 😝😝 let alone shoot it in my rifles.

Be sure to check around for ammo, prices have gone up of late.

I mostly use CCI. You'd be better off throwing stones at the target than using those Federal Bulk rounds. Pure sh1te.

I found them practically useless, too many flyers/fliers (not sure which spelling version is correct in this part of the world). I couldn't get consistency with them. It seems like the rounds are thrown together in the factory for as cheap as possible with very little quality control.

If you've some decent ammo, try some of that at with a rifle benched at 50m or a pistol benched at 25m and repeat using the Federal ammo. Then compare the groups you get with that and the Federal. You'll see a big difference.

If your a BR shooter then forget bulk ammo like Fed and CCI, its crap and just basic plinking ammo.

SK Std + (Yellow Box) is basic stuff, very greasy/oily lube but shoots good in some rifles but can have numerous flyers in every box.

SK Rifle Match (Red box) is SK's best and not as greasy/oily.

Other flavours of SK are Biathlon (Blue Box), Pistol Match (Green Box) (some Anschutz users love it), SK Flat Nose Basic and Flat Nose Match (basically Std+ with flat nose & SK RM with flat nose).

Top end Eley Target ammo is Tenex (Red Box) (expensive), next comes Match (Black Box) and finally Team (Blue Box).

All other Eley ammo is either sport shooting or game shooting.

RWS make great ammo, try RWS R50/RWS Special Match (Gold Box).

Testing is the name of the game. Once you find a particular lot that shoots to your accuracy requirements, grab as much of it as you can.

So Federal bulk in a CZ 452 Lux with a Sightron 6-24x50. Inch and a half was the general run of it for four groups with one group coming in at 7/8 of an inch. A lot of that was vertical, groups were about half to three quarters of an inch "wide". I wasn't checking for headspace but didn't shoot anything that seemed off from a quick visual as I loaded. Same rifle with RWS R50 can do quarter inch groups. I say "can" btw, don't ask me to do that on demand. But it'd easily be under half an inch at 50.

I must whip the scope off it and see if I can see any difference in groups from prone unsupported.
