My father just got a van (2.2 ford transit custom) and has insured it as a private vehicle as he will not be using it for commercial purposes. He is waiting for the logbook to arrive to tax it but is just wondering if the rate will be higher than the 333 and based on engine capacity therefore making it much more expensive. Is there a section on motortax.ie where you have to input a vat number or commercial insurance policy number in order to for them to determine what rate you get?

You would get a better answer if you move to the motoring forum.

Yup, it's €951 as it will be based on engine size, even for newer vehicles.

He was driving a 2009 2.2 mercedes c class perviously and that was much cheaper. Where is the logic in charging more for the same size engine that's much newer?

If its private then he cannot tax it as a commercial vehicle & doesn't benefit from the reduced commercial tax
