Change Name / Marriage Certificate

    Hi Folks,

Bit confused by the whole name change after marriage which someone maybe able to shed some light on.

So myself and my wife got married in Northern Ireland 3 years ago (she's from the North). On our marriage certificate both our original birth surnames are on the cert. My wife would like to start using my surname going forward for things like passport etc. now, but I'm wondering, as our marriage cert shows her original surname and not mine, do we need a deed pool instead as proof of name change? Or is the marriage cert proof that she is married to me and is entitled to use my surname?

Thanks in advance for any help or information you may be able to give.

    Richie.

Your marriage certificate is proof that she’s legally married to you and if she wants to change her name to yours on her passport or anywhere else she needs to produce that cert and all will be well.

Why is your original birth surname not the surname that you use now?

Thanks, so even though her surname is not shown to be mine on the marriage cert, the fact that we are married gives her legal entitlement to use my surname for passe port if she wishes? I just assumed her surname would have to be mine on the marriage cert or something as proof that she can use my surname (i.e. Like the very first document issued with her using my surname type of thing). Thanks for your info and input, it's really appreciated.

Sorry I might have phrased my question confusingly. So my surname used on the marriage cert is my original birth surname, but my wife's surname used on the marriage cert is her original birth surname too, and not mine. I just assume that most marriage certs, if the wife or husband has chosen to take the other surname, then both their surnames would be the same on the marriage cert i.e. Mrs Mary X and Mr John X... Instead of Mrs Mary Y and Mr John X. Our marriage cert is the latter, whereby our surnames listed on the marriage cert is our original surnames.

No.😊 All marriage certs show the brides maiden name. They must be signed in the maiden name.

You change your name via use & repute. Start using the name you want your name to be. The marriage cert facilitates this and provides a legal document that details the change.

In some countries, you have to change your name as well, but in Ireland you can just start using your spouse's surname on production of your marriage cert.
