Is my retainer just for cosmetic reasons?

Ive started treatment for 2 implants i need for 2 teeth beside each other on the top row. What was left of the damaged teeth were extracted last week and I got fitted with a temporary retainer. Just wondering if this is just for cosmetic reasons or do I have to wear it to protect the gum?

It may be a space maintainer to stop drift/over eruption of adjacent/opposing teeth. Best to discuss with whomever is doing your implants.
