Importing VW Tiguan AllSpace 2.0L Petrol from Hong Kong

    Hello, I am returning to Ireland after 8 years abroad and plan to import my 2019 VW Tiguan Allspace 2.0L Petrol under the Transfer of Residence rules as I have owned it for more than 12 months. It is right-hand drive so that's not an issue.

    The main question I have is about Insurance. I have a Full Irish Drivers License since 2014 but have not driven in Ireland since then. I have a No Claims Letter from my Hong Kong insurer for the last 3 years, but I doubt this will be acceptable to many/any Irish insurers.

    Has anyone had a similar experience insuring a non-UK import after being outside of Ireland for several years, and if so can you recommend an insurer to try?

    Try them all. Simple answer. But pick up the phone. Don't just do internet quotes.

    Btw as a Hong Kong import, would you not need some sort of "safety" classification certification for the EU/Ireland?

    My sister is returning also, she had some problems with insurance quotes, and was told to be a name driver for 3 months on someone's policy, so now she is on my brothers policy at the cost of 20-30 euro. Hopefully when she comes back, her 3 months will be done and will get a quote.

    Singapore import VW’s are fine for insurance. Jap import VW’s are also grand for the most part. So there shouldn’t be an issue there.

    The problem is you will not have any no claims bonus

    Thanks. I received three indicative quotes (won't be final until the car is registered). Two of the insurers indicated that while the model version may not match exactly, as long as it is the same engine size the quotes should be valid. They range from EUR1,000-1,500 for Comprehensive, which seems reasonable given it is an import and I lack a No Claims Bonus.
