    Hi there,

    I have the current build,

    i5-6600k

    CPU Cooler Shadow Rock2

    Motherboard Asus Z170-K

    Memory 2x 8gb ddr4 3000

    Storage MX200 500GB

Video Card Inno 3D triple X GTX 1070

    Case Antec GX500

    Power Supply Pure Power 600W

Would my computer still work if the graphics card was swapped out for a 3070?

It should work. A 3070 can pull up to 220W stock, so there should be enough power.

You should be warned the 3070 will be significantly bottlenecked on that older system though.

So for me to upgrade I am looking at a complete overhaul :-/

Probably best to wait to the next release of the 40 series cards

What are you aiming to do here? Is the 1070 dead, and a replacement absoulutely needed? Or just looking to add some new life to an old machine?

Yes, a 4C/4T CPU is quite outdated. You should be looking at upgrading the CPU as the prices and supply are now normal and leave the GPU for later when hopefully you won't be paying 2-300+ above MSRP.

    Thanks for that.

Any idea what the components of this build can be sold for?

Looks like about €60 for the CPU, and still around €80 for the board.

Cheers, any idea what the GPU would get? Or would it be best to sell system as a whole

CeX offers 220 cash which is crazy considering its age but not so much considering the current market...but they do sell it for 400 which is even crazier :)

Unless you want to do the lot at once, I'd suggest holding onto it, and replacing the board and CPU first. You could keep everything else, and then only replace the GPU later this year.

Just looking to add a bit of life into the old dog :)

You could replace the board and CPU now, moving over the other parts. An 8 core Ryzen 5800x costs about €350 or so, and an Asus B550 board is about €150-ish. After that, you can drop in a new RTX card, and get the full benefit of it.

I'd go with the 5700x instead of the 5800x

I have a similar setup. When graphics cards come down in price a little more, I'm just going to replace the whole thing. No point in just replacing parts on a system so old, and IMHO no point in paying what are still stupid prices for GPUs, although the situation is better than it was a few months ago.

I'm the same. Using an 8320 with a RX480. Hopefully prices will get back to normal or close to in the next few months.

Thanks all, loads to think about :-/. Not going to rush, going to wait for everything to die down and prices to lower.

Are you upgrading because of difficultly with some games or what?

Because the 1070 is still a reasonably good card - around the same as an RTX3050 maybe, so still good for 1080p high settings at 1080p in the main.

However with that CPU quite a few new games would struggle, some would be borderline, if not actually, unplayable.

So even just a new board + CPU will bring you on leaps and bounds.

Thanks for that, goimg to take your advise and hold onto the card and change motherboard and processor. Is there any point in waiting for the new AMD boards and processors that are coming? The processors have a different pin layout are look not to be compatible with old boards. If I upgraded now I wonder whould I be shooting myself in the foot for future upgrades?

Every upgrade you make will be "obsolete" in 6-9 months if you think this way.

Just buy what you need & worry about that later.

    Right now, you can get 6-core/12-thread Ryzen 5-5600 / Intel 12400 for around 200euro, good motherboard B550(AMD) / B660(Intel) 120-160 euro, 2x8Gb DDR4-3200 CL16 / 3600-CL18 for 70euro.

Do you want a new case? Corsair 4000D Airflow is 80euro; or you could look at downsizing the case size to mATX/mini-ITX.

I agree with K.O.kiki. Buy what meets your needs now.

I think you could wait only to find yourself in another GPU or general part shortage. I'm not convinced GPU'S are going to drop in price to much lower than what they currently are and infact might increase with next generation releases as a glut of people stuck on 2 or 3 older generation cards attempt to upgrade then. I expect next generation GPU'S to continue to trend of higher rise in price than rise in performance.
