Insuring 2 cars on the same policy?

Wife's car is out of action waiting for a replacement engine which is proving difficult to get.

We have another car but it has been off the road for 18months. (Back tax owed as i didnt declare it off the road during Covid, no nct)

Has anyone had any success insuring a second car on their policy? 3 months would buy us the time to get the damaged car fixed.

It needs an NCT - can the 3rd car be driven whilst waiting for the test?

Just transfer the insurance to the other car

...and transfer ownership to somebody else, and immediately back to the Wife to resolve the Back Tax issue.

Car can't be driven while waiting for the test. You'll most likely get past a checkpoint but if you need to use your insurance it won't be covered, 3rd party claims will be covered but the insurance company will sue you and win for any money paid out.

Only some companies specify that a current NCT is required. Others don't.

All require the car to be kept in a road worthy condition. While an NCT doesn't guarantee a car being road worthy a car without an NCT isn't road legal, therefore not road worthy, except in a few very limited circumstances.

As said transfer ownership to remove need to back tax. You can easily transfer insurance.

You can tax car online after ownership is transferred before you get the paperwork back as the pin is usually last 4 digits of vin. Log into tax website before transferring ownership to confirm pin, then check website every few days to see if ownership was completed.

To get fast NCT ring NCT hotline and you should get a test date fast. Ideally you should trailer car to NCT. If it's been off the road for a year you should at least get mechanic to check brakes and replace brake fluid. Tyres can get flat spots and blow out at high speed if parked up. These sorts of things may not be picked up on NCT and engine maintenance is not really checked in NCT.

If you chance driving to NCT bring proof of NCT booking, just in case. You could get mechanic to book early NCT, they have access to extra hidden NCT slots, and bring the car for you.
