PUP to JSA

Hi guys, my wife lost her job due to covid and went on PUP. She received a letter last week to say that she is now on JSA. I'm confused as I thought she wasn't eligible for JSA due to us being married and me working. Is this not the case? Neither of us have ever been on benefits until she went on PUP and I just don't want to receive a bill in a few years for several thousand euro to pay it back. Thanks.

Hi, are you sure it's JSB and not JSA

The reason I ask is, JSB is not means tested and is assessed on your wife's contributions and average Gross pay for the year applicable (2020) , benefits claimed are normally assessed on info from 2 years previous.

Due to the nature of PUP and it ending, the Department decided to assess eligibility and award rather than having thousands of people having to manually apply or attend intero centres.

Now, if it is JSA she's been awarded it would have required a means test and as you correctly say, she may have been awarded a minimum amount based on means, your earnings etc and this would need addressing.

Can you check if its JSB or JSA and has she been awarded full rate €208 .

Finally, she should have received a letter previously, explaining what the process was re PUP ending and the transition.

Hello and my apologies for the delay in replying. Thank you for your very detailed response. Yes I was incorrect, it is JSB and it is 208 a week. Will this be for a short period or will she be eligible for it until she gets a new job?

Hi, no problem, I thought it was JSB and it would have been awarded without means test and based on contributions from 2020.

Basically she will retain this payment for 6 to 9 months depending on contributions but I'm guessing 9 months. Obviously she will be required to be seeking employment and will be asked to sign on at her nearest intero centre, probably monthly.

If she doesn't get a job, she will then need to apply for JSA and that is means tested but that's for another day.

I'll attach link on JSB she might find helpful.
