Hobby Advice - Learning about the Law for Fun

    Hi

I have an interest in learning about rights, laws and legal terms and don’t really know where to start.

It's kind of evolved out of an interest in learning about words, history, debates, and a little bit of Latin.

Can anyone share a link to websites or books to buy about beginning to understand the law?

I have recently treated myself to a years subscription of the Law Society Gazette. It’s very interesting, if you’re looking to read up on the current affairs in the legal and political arena. You can read the PDF version online for free, but I like to have the actual magazine to read.

You can even go back to previous years and see the magazine from them. I had a great laugh reading the article from the 1997 issue where they discussed the “world wide web."

Here is a link to the free version:

Any basic books for sale or websites that provide good information would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

You could do worse than get yourself a copy of "Learning the Law", by Glanville Williams, which is now in about it's twentieth edition. It's not so much about the law as about what's involved in studying law, but this necessarily involves covering some of the basic building blocks of the legal system. It's aimed at the complete beginner - first year law students, or school students who are considering whether to do law in university.

On www.courts.ie there is a judgements section with new judgements added frequently, sometimes several in a day. It is public access and you can read court decisions, some of which review the existing law comprehensively.
