I am just enquiring if anyone has ever experienced anyone going the route of converting a garage workshop into a residential dwelling ?

it would need permission as it’s a complete change of purpose in addition to the adaptive measures like extra windows and doors and so on and perhaps a new roof and complete insulation would be required as well as flooring and heating etc...

The garage is not connected physically to the residence but shares land… about 25 feet from the house.

The structure is about 11ft x 28ft x10 ft high

im not after any advice re: planning itself…

just any feedback if anyone has undertaken a similar project and if the project was successful from a planning perspective and any feedback would be appreciated.

Engage a local Planning Agent and take it from there.

Every site is different and will. We’d to be assessed against the criteria fkr one off housing / infill housing.

Are you looking to convert a garage/workshop/shed into habitable space ancillary to the main house. Or a separate standalone dwelling that would be lived in independently?

Sounds like the latter. In which case, It would possible be cheaper and easier and better to just knock it.

An exception to that would be if it was a heritage type building that had significant character worth preserving. Refer to grand designs for the struggles with such a build

    A stand-alone stone dwelling… into a residential dwelling.

from our perspective structure wise it needs insulation, new windows, removal of garage door and proper front door and access …and indeed all the aesthetic betterments…

it has a brand new roof, and building of stone structure is of quality…
