sky multiroom with no internet

Is it possible to have sky nowadays with no broadband, moving into Newhouse with no broadband for the foreseeable future and wondering what my options are.

You can have main Q box without Internet, but all the apps, box sets etc won't work, live TV will work OK. Multiroom mini boxes are wireless now and won't work without an Internet link back to the main box.

I’m not sure that Sky will install Sky Q in a premises with no broadband connection - I’m not sure how the viewing card can be activated in such circumstances. Certainly the official line is that Sky Q requires a broadband connection but maybe a mobile hotspot can be used to activate the viewing card in a fix. (What about the “call homes” that at least used to have to be done from time to time?)

Im distinguishing the “never had and never will have broadband” from the “temporary loss of broadband” scenario. In the latter certain features do work, at least on the main boxes, which can receive live tv from the satellite and view recordings. As stated above mini boxes require a LAN (if not necessarily internet) connection to the main box to even work at all, and need an internet connection to be activated in the first place.

At the moment i have multiroom at home with no internet, that was installed years ago just wondering would that still be possible?

You need broadband for multiroom but your main sky box should work ok without it. I was without broadband for a while with no problems.

I'm assuming Sky does not install the older Sky+ boxes anymore. It was definitely possible with those. You simply had a second Sky box and s second pair of cables to the dish/lnb and you paid a multiroom sub which was linked to your main account I assume you know this and this is what you had yourself.

In theory multiroom could work without an actual internet connection even with SkyQ. Technically the SkyQ box could run a local wireless hotspot of which the others SkyQ yokes could feed the satellite signal and recorded programs off. Or you could have your own wifi router just for local in-house wireless without an outside line and the SkyQ box uses that. But whether Sky promotes this and whether the SkyQ box can physically/logically do this I don't know. Obviously all the online features wouldn't be available. You need to speak to Sky I think.

Sky Q multiroom boxes will work with a LAN connection only with certain restrictions. But they can’t be initially activated without an internet connection. Temporary outage okay (ish), no connection at all not.

Worth noting the old Sky HD multiroom boxes were a completely different kettle of fish - fully fledged DVB-S recievers with a tuner and wired connection to the dish. Sky Q multiroom boxes are slaves to the main box and about as useful as a brick without a connection.

think im just going to take my old boxes from the home house up so and see can it continue like the good old days.

The Q box is now the only box that sky installs sadly. It's a pity really because the menus of the + box were far superior to the Q

So a sky mini box will work fine for live tv if you hard wire it to the main box.

It doesn’t even need to be Ethernet, it can be WiFi. However an internet connection is required to activate the box.
