    Hello,

I’m hoping someone can give some advice and apologies it’s a petty novice question.

I recently bought a 2008 VW Passat 1.9 TDI, and want to take the best care of it as I can. I want to buy some engine oil and coolant to have on hand but can’t figure out which type is the best and most suitable for the car.

The technical data booklet covers a selection of different engines and I’m not 100% sure of the one I have, possibly 77KW TDI, though the booklet specifies information for engines with a diesel particulate filter and for ones without.

I’m dragging this question out but any idea if the engine in this Passat has a DPF and what oil and coolant would you recommend.

    Thanks for any help,

Put the reg into cartell and tell us what model description it gives.

    don’t think it’ll have a DPF anyway, being a 1.9

Might be worth your while to pick up a Haynes manual for your car, they can be a bit vague but it will guide you through all the basic maintenance you're looking for to look after your car

Have a look under the carpet in the boot for the fitted options and specifications sticker. At the top will be the VIN and underneath will be engine code, power output, gearbox fitted and lots more. If it's a 1.9PD engine then semi synthetic 10-40 should be OK.

Thanks, I just did that, it says:

    Make & ModelVOLKSWAGEN PASSATDescription1.9 TDI 4DR B6 HIGHLINE 105Engine Capacity 1896

is odd that the manual doesn’t revert to CC engine but instead KW. Can these things be converted to figure out what a 1896 CC is in KW?

    Thanks

Kw is power too. multiply the kw by 1.36 to get PS (which is the German unit of horsepower that VW will also quote instead of HP - they are close but not equal)

Not related to engine size, which is what the 1896cc is (just under 1.9 litres)

you don’t have a DPF either.

Once the oil meets VW 507.00 specification you’ll be fine.

Thanks for that, I’ll source some of that, though it seems I know have a bigger problem, the bonnet of the car won’t open. I have never opened it before, is recently bought second hand and stu poodle in hindsight I never opened the bonnet, I wouldn’t have known what I was looking at anyway. But it seems the lever release does nothing and from reading up online this is not completely uncommon that the cable is stretched or broken. Would anyone have any advice with this. I’ll also open a new thread as this question has escalated. I really appreciate everyone’s help with the oil issue.

It won't be ok, the PD takes a specific oil, either 505 01 or 507 00. Over the long term the PDs tend to wear down the cam lobes due to the extra stress on the cam running the injectors. Once the cam lobe wear starts, holes in the lifters are the next port of call. This is usually seen much faster on PDs that have any old oil put in them.

OP, get any 5w30 fully synthetic oil that meets or is approved to VW 507 00 spec. Castrol Edge would be on the higher end of the price range, I use Mannol 7715 in most of the older cars that take 507 00 spec, available in most motor factors and reasonably priced.

I think you are making a rod for your own back with a Passat of that age. My mother has an 07 one and it is a money pit. Always some bloody thing gone or going in it that requires a dealer or VW specialist fix. Steering column problems, key receptacle problems, electric handbrake, multiple other seemingly intractable electrical and electronic problems. Always something with that blasted yoke and it don't even have 200k kms on it.

Sister had one aswell and same story.

Great car if you like constant fiddling.

Yes indeed, apologies, I was a bit general and should have said 5-40 but 505:01 should be good enough. 507:00 is fully synthetic long-life I thought and not necessary if you're doing fixed short interval oil changes no?
