Anyone else listen to these? They're pretty great!

It's "a Star Trek podcast from a couple of guys who are just a little bit embarrassed about having a Star Trek podcast". Lots of good-natured light-fun-making of a thing they love, and telling embarasing stories about being Star Trek fans in their youth. Really good banter, not super nerdy, and a nice way to recap the episodes.

They've been going since 2016 so just a couple years before the new wave of Trek shows. The first episode is TNG S01E01 and then it's an episode per episode after that. By now they've done all of TNG, DS9, and are onto the tail-end of Voyager season 3 at the moment. They also have a sister show, The Greatest Discovery, where they do the same for new Trek as it's released (their Picard S02E05 episode will be out on Tuesday).

If you've not heard any before, the beginning is a great place to start. I actually put on the first episode again just a couple weeks ago, just to remind myself what it was like compared to the newer ones, and was amazed at how tip-top the quality is right out of the gate. I couldn't help but roll on to episode 2, 3, 4... I'm a few episodes into TNG season 3 now :-D. Such a fun listen, again.

Humour can be a bit raunchy at times though. Not toooo bad but particularly in the earlier seasons they have a bit of a running joke about Picard grooming Wesley and some jokes about Bill Cosby. Nothing too explicit but might not be everyone's cup of earl grey. They kinda tone that down a fair bit as the show became more popular too.

I'm a big fan of the podcast(s). Whenever we get an ice cream van round our way it makes me instantly think of one of their best running jokes : Kevin Uxbridge https://greatestgen.fandom.com/wiki/Kevin_Uxbridge

Yep. It is the only podcast I have ever listened to (if you include Friendly Fire)! I've heard all their Next Gen and just finished their DS9 today.

Their level of west-coast-style Right-On-Ness can be a little annoying on occasion but they're an entertaining pair. I miss Friendly Fire tbh.

That's from an early season 3 episode, I just heard it yesterday :-D

They didn't really make too big a deal of it at the time but then the first post-episode Uxbridge impression shows up just a couple of episodes later, it's clear it's a winner.

Love the show, came across it in early 2016 a few episodes in and listen to it as soon as it's out.

I do think that there's a noticeable difference between the Greatest Generation and the Greatest Discovery. They seem far more forgiving of the new shows that the older ones. Though I think this must be to do with getting access to screeners, on the Greatest Generation recently they do appear to be taking some swipes at Discovery.

The Greatest Discovery shows I've actually enjoyed the most are the ones where they discuss TOS episodes, never having seen them before

Not long finished my rewatch of TNG, wish I knew about this while I was still watching it, will definitely give them a listen. On Season 2 of DS9 now, though haven't watched an episode in a while but it will be nice to have these as a companion when I get back to it (assuming I like them).

I do enjoy RedLetterMedia's star trek vids on youtube whenever they do them (they do not like new trek at all though...not that I can blame them).

This is a slight tangent but for former "Friendly Fire" listeners I'd recommend checking out "Unclear and Present Danger", a podcast on 90s post cold-war thrillers. A lot of their episodes could easily have wound up on the "list" of films on Friendly Fire. They approach the films from a bit more of a serious standpoint than FF did but they did have a 'Trek' crossover where they looked at Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country: https://jamellebouie.net/unclear-and-present-danger/2022/4/15/star-trek-vi-the-undiscovered-country

I started listening recently to Her First Trek, which is actually good fun without being "funny ha ha". The concept is simple: a trekkie gets his non-trekkie missus to watch the different Trek shows and they discuss it.

They are both likeable enough, decent chemistry and good production quality (ie it doesn't sound like someone ringing you from the jacks).

Your man's taste is highly questionable though. His favourite Trek show is Enterprise!
