I got a second hand gearbox fitted yesterday. since I got the car back I find myself driving faster than normal, 70 mph in a 60 mph zone, 60 in a 50 zone etc 4th and 5th gear are dead, 50 mph to 60 mph in 5th gear is dead, no response really when I accelerate.

Different gear ratios, have you checked actual speed by GPS compared to your speedometer?

Is sounds like longer gears, possibly a box from a diesel, is your car petrol?

    Wrong gearbox I'd say.

It's possible the car has a different gearbox that isn't that same as what was originally in the car, but what car were you driving whilst yours was down getting the new box fitted? If you were in a different car for a few days it's possible your senses were thrown off in the different car

it is a diesel 1.6 peugeot partner.

I was driving another diesel car but just for 1 day and I have driven the other car loads of times before.

I will check what the GPS speed reads.

I checked the GPS speed there

50 kph on speedometer 45 kph on GPS

60 kph on speedometer 62 kph on GPS

80 kph on speedometer 76 kph on GPS

100 kph on speedometer 91 kph on GPS

5th gear going up a hill, it loses power.

Sounds like longer gear ratios, could be difficult to prove without taking the box out again.

Ask the mechanic that worked on it.

I am considering getting the original gearbox reconditioned. I would be wary of trying another second hand gearbox.

Would it not be totally normal for the cars speedo to overread vs a GPS one by about 10%

Also you don't mention the speed you'd be doing but climbing a hill in top gear is always gonna be a bit of a struggle

Yes the gps usually reads lower than the speedometer. not sure about 91 kph on gps though.

I would be doing between 50 mph and 60 mph going up the hill.
