Is Eir using Google DNS as default in their routers?

    Hi,

    Just wondering if anyone else using Eir is also seeing Google DNS (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) as the default DNS settings in their routers?

    First noticed it early last year, then they changed back to Eir's own servers in the latter part of the year, now again, since around January it's back to Google's DNS server settings.

    Phoned EIR Support, no help at all.

    Using an F2000, btw.

    Thanks.

    not sure re their default , but certain F2000 has option to set DNS of your choice, somewhere under Internet tab

    I reconfigured my F2000 to use Google DNS. I wonder was yours a (partially) reconditioned one? Or perhaps someone in the house changed it.

    Thanks for the replies.

    @smuggler.ie I've changed the ipv4 dns back to eir's (159.134.0.1, 159.134.0.2), but cannot track down eir's ipv6 dns settings.

    Unbelievably, Eir "tech" support couldn't even provide me their dns settings, and actually suggested I google them. I don't see them anywhere on eir's website, and a search online led me to the ipv4 settings here on board's.

    If anyone could point me in the right direction to eir's ipv6 dns settings, I would be most grateful.

    @NickNickleby I'm the only one with access to the router. The dns settings have always been eir's, except for a few months early last year when eir stealthily changed them to google's (confirmed by eir tech support at the time). Now it seems they've done it again.

    It boils my blood that they would do this, as I avoid anything google like the plague due to privacy concerns.

    Would really be interested to hear if anyone else using Eir is also seeing Google DNS as the default DNS settings in their routers?

    Thanks.

    No easy task, but eventually found eir's ipv6 dns server settings. Cannot believe eir would not display them on their website.

    For future reference, in case anyone else needs them;

    EIR ipv4 dns settings.

    159.134.0.1 as primary

    159.134.0.2 as secondary

    EIR ipv6 dns settings.

    2001:bb0::1 as primary

    2001:bb0::2 as secondary

    With many thanks to; -https://bb6-ie.blogspot.com/2017/04/blog-post.html

    Still interested to hear if anyone else using Eir has also had their router's DNS sneakily changed to Google DNS.

    @kathleen37 Thanks, and apologies for the delay in replying.

    I'm guessing you applied the cloudflare settings yourself, and eir set the google dns settings?

    If any other EIR customers would care to check and report their dns server settings, it only takes a few seconds at the link below.

    Eir DNS servers broke many times in the past which from a customer point of view meant it appeared the internet was down. Some if not all of that was caused by a denial of service attack on only the DNS servers, which is/was the weak link of their infrastructure. You may have changed settings. EIr may have remotely changed settings on routers during / after a near outage or outage. If I was in charge it would make sense to have non eir as secondary DNS. Having non own company DNS does increase traffic outside EIR. It also prevents them blocking certain websites using DNS which they may want to do for legal or traffic / virus problems such as to block banking scam websites.

    You can run non eir controlled routers on your network. You may be able to put old router in pass through mode or even replace router with your own where eir cannot remotely change firmware and settings. Having a separate router and WiFi is sometime best practice for speed and getting latest updates.

    Yeah, had 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 set and I didn't set them, just changed one to Open 1.1.1.1.

    I only checked as I have fast speeds as per various speed tests but absolutely piss poor connection to typical sites via WiFi.

    I have been using a pihole the past while, if telecom eireann sneakily changed my settings I would notice straight away 🤣

    I know this is a year old, but the settings are the same on their new fibre box:

    Primary DNS Server 159.134.0.1

    Secondary DNS Server 159.134.0.2

    I ran the 'extended test' DNS leak option on the website you gave, and this is what it returned:

    159.134.0.38 dnscache00.cra.dublin.eircom.net. Eir Broadband Athlone, Ireland

    159.134.0.39 dnscache01.cra.dublin.eircom.net. Eir Broadband Athlone, Ireland

    159.134.0.40 dnscache02.cra.dublin.eircom.net. Eir Broadband Athlone, Ireland

    159.134.0.41 dnscache03.cra.dublin.eircom.net. Eir Broadband Athlone, Ireland

    159.134.0.70 dnscache00.cwm.dublin.eircom.net. Eir Broadband Athlone, Ireland

    159.134.0.71 dnscache01.cwm.dublin.eircom.net. Eir Broadband Athlone, Ireland

    159.134.0.72 dnscache02.cwm.dublin.eircom.net. Eir Broadband Athlone, Ireland

    159.134.0.73 dnscache03.cwm.dublin.eircom.net. Eir Broadband Athlone, Ireland

    159.134.0.74 None Eir Broadband Athlone, Ireland

    I found this post because I was thinking of changing my DNS settings to cloudflare/google and was wondering if anyone sees any difference on a home network?

    Yes it makes a difference IMHO. I've used Google, Cloudfare, and my current DNS provider of choice is Quad9.
