    Hi there,

I’m looking for an up to date guide on the cost for a handyman call out for a few odd jobs in Dublin. Putting up a few curtain rails and pictures hung being the main jobs and then a few smaller jobs like securing a bookcase to a wall.

I can’t imagine it’s more than half a days work max (although please correct me if I’m underestimating it) and just wondering what to expect quote wise.

    Thank you very much,

    K

    €100

Sounds like an hour to me.

Oh wow great - thanks for the quick reply as I have no reference at all for what to expect. Thanks!

Actually mind if I follow up with a question - my assumption is that the €100 is more like a minimum charge as if it’s only going to take an hour or so it’s not worth it to them to call out for less than that? And not €100 per hour as that sounds pretty extortionate?!

I'd imagine getting someone out of a yellow pages type directory for your area to do the few bits will be a harder job than paying someone .

Best bets probably word of mouth locally for a recommendation for a handyman & then just spent the rest of the year pestering him to call & do the bits. ( unless their the exception & have a good word on when they'll do it)

If you want a price on above bits, you'll probably, scare them off .best just take the chance they'll not ask for a ransom for it.

1 hr . very optimistic . iv spent 1hr on just one picture with all the fafing around deciding where its going and changing it when not happy

Half a day's work easy including travel time, setting up, cleaning up etc.

Any family members or friends who might do it, or even do the easy bits?

You won’t get anyone do a half days work like that for €100.

Try https://hangit.ie/ Friends have used them and say they are good.

The OP can decide where the picture is going before the handyman arrives .

I cant understand people paying someone to hang a picture but that's a different story.

Id have thought €70 for an hour, €120 for half a day (4 hours) €200/€250 for full day 6 to 8 hours). Some charge per item €35/€50 per curtain pole etc.

Obviously you don't want to get ripped off but I'd put quality above price.

if only it was that simple . i try not to do that kind of work if i can help it. total nightmare.

    up a bit

    right a bit

    over a bit

    down bit

    right there

now get out of the way so i can see it without your rms in the way

    left a bit

    no far

    ok hold it there

    askes husband what he thinks

2 min conversation about why he is wrong

ok . decided where its going. marks wall

i think it could look better on this other wall. . ok

    up a bit

    right a bit

    over a bit

    down bit

    right there

her sister comes in . another pointless conversation

    up a bit

    right a bit

    over a bit

    down bit

    right there

have we considered the cat in this (seriously it has happened)

    im not sure

put it back on the first wall

    thats not where it was

    up a bit

    right a bit

    over a bit

    down bit

    right there

    its not level

    im not sure

i think i hav other frames that would suite better

brings out a 6 frame set that make a fancy pattern but its a cheap knock off and the measurements dont work out

    up a bit

    right a bit

    over a bit

    down bit

    right there

you hold all 6 of these frames while a look at them from every angle imaginable

ok finally decided and hung on the wall

dont worry im not picky (ya right)

now back to the first frame

what would it look like in each room down stairs

    etc

    etc

    etc

OMG , why is the bill so high. you only hung a few pictures. i should be a carpenter,

    total nightmare

One screw or tack in the wall is for the handyman - customer has to decide location on own time

Thank you and yes you "nailed" it. I'll go now.

But this in a nutshell plus a few other reasons why I'd rather pay for someone who knows what they're doing, who will do it once, correctly.

Thank you all - the ballpark figures are very helpful. If it's around €120/150 for half a day or so I'd be ok with that.

I haven't heard of them before and they look interesting - thank you!

Without advertising a company (you can only do that via pm) perhaps you could report back to let us know how you got on. It might help others reading this in the next few months

Yes good idea - I've asked the company cited above for a quote and I also have a name of a handyman local to South Dublin. I'll report back if either go ahead as it's a bit of a job in itself to find these things out without word of mouth. Thanks all!

I asked for someone to change a double dimmer switch to an ordinary switch. I stated I have the new switch here too.

Lowest quote I got was €250. At first I thought there were too many wires in it to do myself, but in the end I looked it up on youtube and did it in 5 minutes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 455 ✭✭mcgragger

That quote was someone who didn't want the job or from an arsehole.

250 for a straightforward switch swap is madness. Even with the cost of fuel wrapped in to call out! ( I'm a sparks)

I also hope the first thing you did when DIY on cabling is switch off the mains !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,367 ✭✭✭JimmyVik

3 different quotes. That was the cheapest :)

Definitely switched off the mains. Even then I was nervous :)

I pay my handyman 18/hr, although it's a little bit outside Dublin.

If it's a difficult job or requires significant equipment (e.g. kango or cement mixer) I throw in a bit more.

Most trades don't want piecemeal work.

You say you've half a day's work. What the guy meant to do for the rest of his day then? He'll need to find another job that's a half-day, and make sure both customers are ready for him on the same day.

There's plenty of work out there. Time spent on you is time he could have spent on a larger job, a recurring job, or a job from some contractor who regularly gives work.

And not criticising the OP at all, but for small jobs like that, you're almost better off heading to Homebase and buying everything yourself. If you can't physically do the work, then ask a friend or family member.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,220 ✭✭✭✭Lumen

Yeah, but this is the whole point of a handyman. They do piecemeal work.

Half day 100 to 200 depending on the man

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 65 ✭✭unimaginativeusername

Just as an update - the handyman contact I was given wasn't available and didn't seem to be for a while. I went with another option and very happy with the job. Happy to give details if anyone wants to message. For some reference, the job took just under three hours in the end.

Thanks for input - most of it was very helpful especially the recommendation that I went with in the end.
