Just wondering if anyone has any opinions on the following...

Principal wants all classes to start Christian meditation every day. We are a Catholic primary school but I have reservations about this as all classes have children of different or no faith. Happy to do normal meditation as it would be inclusive of all children bit do have reservations about this type of meditation. Anyone experience this?

Principal would have form for trying to force religious beliefs onto children and parents including current campaigning for children to participate in Sunday Mass. Doing this by specificly questioning children as young as 7 on why they are not volunteering or attending services.

You said it yourself: you’re a Catholic primary school, so this is perfectly reasonable and very likely perfectly innocent too. How exactly would Christian meditation be significantly different from secular meditation?

Appreciate the response. Principal wants the children chanting religious mantras as part of the meditation. I just think this is odd. When you say perfectly innocent what do you mean? I have listened to some child based Christian meditation and there's no chanting involved. Very much based around God loving us and taking care of us.

You've no choice really, ethos trumps all.

Do it for a few seconds every day and tick the box.

These type of principals change initiatives more often than underpants.

This seems odd alright. As far as i know any kid can opt out of religion or anything resembling religion.

    Yes and no.

They can still be requested to stay in the classroom for supervision purposes.

Can a teacher opt out though?

I'm assuming what your principal is looking to implement is the meditation here http://www.christianmeditation.ie/?q=tracksforbeginners I've used them in my classroom. The chanting is the reciting of the ma-ra-na tha the word is used to redirect th children from their minds wandering. Have a listen to the tracks for beginners theres 5 mins mediation of silence the kids just meditate in silence - feedback is they really enjoy it youd hear a pin drop from all regardless of religion/noreligion I wouldnt be worried about it.
