Block smell from home in sewer pipe

We have a sewer pipe running under our utility room. There’s a hole in the top of the pipe. Any ideas how to stop the smell? Someone suggested a push fit drain blanking cap. The problem is that the this runs into the wall - meaning the cap is too big. I did a DIY job of sawing a side off the cap and sticking it on but…
