I bought fake supermarket vouchers online :(

    Hi folks,

A few weeks ago I bought a supermarket voucher on a well known buy and sell site. The individual has hundreds of positive feedback, has a long history of selling tech type goods/games with the site etc. I paid for the voucher via Revolut and the digital voucher was sent to me via WhatsApp. I liked how convenient the digital voucher was and I had no issue with it in store. It was also very easy to track the balance, as this was displayed at the end of the receipt. A few weeks later I decided to buy a few more of these vouchers. While I verified the balance at the time, unfortunately these vouchers turned out to be fake ones and were voided by the supermarket. They are worthless and they all have a balance of 0.

I contacted the seller and while he is replying to messages, it's going nowhere and he won't refund me. He said he traded the vouchers for other items and hasn't had any issues with other vouchers he has sold. He keeps saying how the vouchers were valid when he sold them to me. I contacted Revolut but they can't do a chargeback, as I received the items I paid for and it's not a case of fraud etc. The supermarket in question told me that 'an investigation in ongoing' and the vouchers have been voided from their system. They couldn't tell me any more.

Where do I stand? I'm at my wits end here... I feel so foolish, I'm usually very sensible when it comes to buying items online. What can I do?

Suggest to him that you will file a fraud complaint with the garda and also make a complaint to the selling site.

I've contacted the site I purchased the vouchers on. As it's a private sale, there's nothing they can do. They just attached a link from the CCPC about buying second-hand goods online.

I'll pay a visit to my local Garda station over the weekend. Thanks for the suggestion.

If he traded them from someone else, he is caught in middle. The site cannot help you. He cannot help you. Go to the Gardai and see if they will pick up the trail.

    Sadly, they probably won't
