NCT fail, lambda reading 1.80

    Hi Folks,

I have a 2011 Mini Cooper S and it has failed emissions check because the lambda was reading too high @ 1.80

    Engine/Oil Temperature 83 degrees

Low Idle (700 rpm) CO 0.01%

    HC 0 ppm

High Idle (2920 rpm) Lambda: 1.80

    CO 0.02 vol%

    HC 0 ppm

I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas? all the threads I've read online say that even a reading of 1.10 is very high so not sure what would cause a reading of 1.80

    Thanks!

A high lambda combined with low CO and HC readings can often be indicative of a holed exhaust system, it takes very little air ingress to raise the lambda and dilute the other readings. I would suggest getting your exhaust system checked out, has any section, ie, the back box been renewed since 2011. Also, if available, have a look at last years emission levels.

    Here is a example.....

Just to update this, I took the car to an exhaust centre and they said the tester must have put the instrument into the gap between the exhaust and the chrome surround, it was the only way to get readings so wild. When they tested it was slightly over which turned out to be a pinhole in the exhaust.
