putting extra shelf in hot press

I'm putting extra shelf in hot press. The existing battens are 40mm x 20mm and are stuck then nailed to drywall.

What nails would i use?. The ones in it existing battens seem very thin small heads. How far further than the 20 mm shoud they go into the wall?

probably used oval nails as above with gripfill adhesive. would be better to drill holes and use wall plugs and screws

That is called Slatted shelving

You could use 40 mm screws

1 screw at each end of the each 40 mm x 20 mm.

To prevent the end of the batten from splitting, you could drill a 3mm hole to take each screw. Also using a cordless screwdriver, set it to anti-clockwise and push the screw in to the 20 mm batten. This should prevent splitting.

He wants to fix battens to plasterboard.

How does setting the driver to anti-clockwise help prevent splitting?

I haven't heard of that before?

If SoleWriter is fixing battens to the side walls of the Hotpress to hold the slatted shelving, then 45 mm x 20 mm battens fixed to the studs with 60 mm screws will be perfect.

It's hardly gonna be taking huge weight. Consider using a grip fill type product for the whole thing. Wouldn't want to find pipes in that wall.

I would also glue the lateral shelf batons or just leave them floating

The existing shelves are adhesive plus nail sure they knew more than me. Its a greenish adhesive.is that gripfill

Any tube of adhesive for timber and plaster will do
