Typically it's not recommended to totally block as chimney as some ventilation us needed. A cheap option is to fit a Chinese hat on top but slide it right down so it 99% blocks air and stops rain. You can fit a chimney balloon at the bottom, or you can stuff newspapers bor clothes into a black bag and mostly block chimney.

If you intend removing fireplace you need a small vent at the bottom.

Permanent capping may not be the way to go in case you or future owner wants a fire or wood stove etc.

You could get a chimney cleaner to clean chimney and go on roof and fit Chinese hat.

Thanks zg3409 for your advice. Appreciate it!

Does BnQ or Woodley sell those Chinese hat?

Its a bit high to climb up, thinking of getting someone to do it for me. Any good suggestions ? Would I look for a roofer for this kind of job? thanks
