Anyone dye their hair? How often?

How often is too often? There's peroxide so perhaps it can weaken hair? I'm dark brown at the moment. Going for the ultra dark/black look (then grease it up with oil, looks boss), going to need re-coloring every 4 weeks or so, a commitment I'm prepared to make. But - can one over do it with dying and coloring, bad for hair…
