With high global wholesale energy costs and market volatility expected to continue for some time, Bord Gáis Energy has today confirmed that its winter price pledge, which protected customers over the colder winter period, is ending. Regrettably, the company is increasing the average electricity bill by 27% and the average gas bill by 39%. The changes will take effect from 15 April 2022.

I entered into a 12 month contract only a few months back.. Wondering is the rate fixed for the first 12 months or will this increase also apply to me?

The contract lets them increase the price at any time.

Get rid of the carbon taxes now. This is horrendous and a disincentive to heat your house or use energy as it is. Carbon taxes are just piling on the misery and are human rights abuse at this point.

So even if you switched now to a better deal they'd still increase it regardless? Just curious as I've not switched mine in 3 years (Energia dual fuel bundle) and you hear on the radio saying to switch as you'll always save a few hundred per year.

If you havent switched in 3 years then you are already paying at least 30% more than you should be because you havent got the best deal for being a new customer.

Unreal. And it comes online at the same time the government are giving us 200 quid towards our bill. Call me cynical eh.......

At best, you get a fixed discount for the duration of your contract but the unit rate can change month to month.

Yes, you should switch every year, my bill this year is likely to be 700-800 euro for electric. I am saving about 250.

All the other companies are likely to break cover after bord gais, they will all be increasing their prices. It's actually good that they have all managed to wait until at least mid april for the price rise, (i think they all seem to give 4 weeks notice) the weather will be getting warmer, so less cost.

Carbon tax is fixed, so it's not really that big a deal, is it?

Recently switched to Energia as a new customer. Bonkers estimate of a saving of 1,250 over a year dual fuel based on my usage last year.

All the more reason to bin it then. The idea was to make peoples balls squeak. Well they are surely skueking now.

They actually "promised" this price increase back in September, they increased the prices and said they were "frozen until Spring 2022".

True... the idea of the carbon tax was to make everyone think about cutting back on energy use. The current crisis increases are doing the job far more effectively. The carbon tax scam has to stop now - give us viable alternative sources, or accept that the high prices currently being imposed are going to have the same affect (or better) than the intended slowly increasing carbon tax punishment.

We were going to reach the same point with the flawed carbon tax plan anyway .... eventually the consumer would reach the stage where they can't cut back any more, and we still won't have any greener alternatives to move to. The crisis hikes have just forced the point more quickly than the government would have liked and the carbon tax bluff of simply being seen to be doing something, has been called earlier than expected.

I would say they are in quite a panic wondering what to do next .... the price penalty tactic has been taken out of their control and they have no other option to exercise, having ignored the parallel issues of externally dependent energy provision and sustainable environmental protection, for decades.

We are all in for a long and very expensive rough ride people... strap in.

I see they are increasing ESB standing charges by the same amount (27%).

What have standing charges got to do with the price of energy on the wholesale markets?

If this is not a blatant attempt at price gouging, Ill eat my hat.

And they are not going to get away with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,367 ✭✭✭JimmyVik

YEs 100% correct. Standing charges are increasing all over the place. They are supposed to be there to provide the service if you dont pay enough for the fuel. Well thats not a problem now and never was. They are all using the standing charge to catch out anyone who might switch to their own power like those with solar. So they can bleed them for nothing too.

Standing charges should be capped forever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,370 ✭✭✭eeepaulo

That's another €10 in tax just from the standing charge rise.

I guess with the rising cost of fuel we will need to pay more tax to cover the rises in fuel allowances for the TDs (it's not up to us it's the civil service)

    Howdy Folks,

I entered into a 24 month contract with them just at the end of January. Got the Hive heating controls. I called them today regarding the increase and wanted to know if I could break the contract. I can and it will cost 50 euros. But I forgot to ask about the HIVE system. would I have to give that back...?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,370 ✭✭✭eeepaulo

Just my 2 cents, i think you probably would but not certain.

I would say stick with them at least until the rise takes effect next month. I think they are all going to increase their prices, i've been switching for years and bord gais are always competitively priced, no one knows for sure but i can not imagine them all not increasing by similar amounts and it happening soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,431 ✭✭✭tom23

Cheers, I guess like a lot of people I am livid with the size of the increase. Its nothing short of price gouging in my opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,760 ✭✭✭Effects

Are you sure you'll get as good a contract elsewhere? Everyone will be raising prices.

Please have pity on your norther cousins. I got notification of a 39% increase in gas prices from April 1st. https://www.airtricitygasni.com/latest-news/item/175/sse-airtricity-to-increase-natural-gas-prices-in-northern-ireland/

Though the net unit price works out a little cheaper
