This one I have really been looking forward

    Starts April 7th

Based on Jake Adelstein's non-fiction first-hand account of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police beat, starring Ansel Elgort and Ken Watanabe. The drama captures Adelstein's daily descent into the neon-soaked underbelly of Tokyo, where nothing and no one is truly what or who they seem.

Finished episodes 2 & 3 and this is a really great story and even more so that it is based on a true account.

Looking forward to the rest to the series now.

it will be on Starzplay in Ireland starting on the 15th of May.

Really wish HBOMax was coming though. I want it most for the Looney Toons and Adventure Time.

The BBC have bought the second window rights to show it this side of the world later in the year.

This is a seriously great show and the story gets more and more intriguing with each episode.

Watched the two latest episodes ,4&5 and it's continuing to be very good and it's also bringing in a few more characters/storylines.

I think I read it's only 8 episodes long so I'm guessing there will be a second season as too much going on to be wrapped up in 3 more episodes.

Absolutely brilliant so far. Michael Mann and Tokyo neon. What more could you ask for? Praying they can sustain the quality right to the end.

Tokyo Vice will be exclusively shown in the UK and Ireland on Starzplay from 15th May, with the first two episodes.

Just finished watching episode 6 and 7 and they have kept up the excellent quality.

Can't believe there is only one episode left in this amazing series.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,272 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

Well that was a top class series and Michael Mann at the top of his game.

While I thought this series was brilliant, I was disappointed with the finale. The series starts with a meeting of Jake and Katagari with the Yakuza, it ended without that meeting being explained. There are too many lose ends for what was described as a “limited series”. The lead has been accused of sexual assault by a number of women and as of yet there is no indication that it will be renewed for a second season with doubts that Elgot would return as the lead if it is. So, disappointing end.

Its a bit of a misnomer to call it a Michael Mann series, he directed the pilot.

Come to say I'd recommend this 8 episodes (season1) show by Michael Mann - actually look forward for season2 ha.

To keep it short, episode1 is definitely a bit 'slow' but after that the pacing is faster and overall production is respectable really. It is almost like a mini documentary with a story (police-journalist-yakuza drama) that actually shows realistic Jap cultural stuff.

We mainly watch it because of Ken Watanabe but ended up enjoying the plot and many other actors/characters. It is based on the well known book and they have done good work for adapting the source material - if you are into police drama series (this one sets in Japan ha), yes this is a must watch.

Does anyone know if any channel is showing this yet outside the US?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,272 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

One episode to go for season 2 which has been fantastic.

I wonder will they wrap everything in the season finale and call it quits on the show or will they renew fora 3rd season.

    I know I'd love a 3rd season.

Great show just discovered it from here and binged watched 2 seasons in a couple of weeks. 3rd season would be great but unlikely I think as mentioned by the real Jake Adelstein, maybe a spin off….

How come this isn't on Sky Atlantic?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,272 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

What a brilliant end to the season that wraps up the story nicely. The two best shows on TV are both set in Japan this one in the 1990’s and the other one Shogun set in the 1600’s.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,187 ✭✭✭ondafly

really enjoyed this. Does anyone have any recommendations maybe of similiar type Yazuza tv shows ? surely Japan has done one or two decent TV live action series ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,286 ✭✭✭Brief_Lives

I just started watching this. up to episode 7 now.

    great series.

Between this and Shogun, I am Arigato-ing everyone.

This was great. Shame about the Sam character, they made her so unlikable.

Season 2 starts May 14th on BBC 1

    Cancelled.

However at least it had a proper closing to the story told over to fantastic seasons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,066 ✭✭✭youcancallmeal

It was a good show but not amazing. I enjoyed the 2 seasons but not disappointed it's cancelled.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,475 ✭✭✭Potatoeman

I really enjoyed it. It was well made and well acted. The only weak point was the writing around Sam, they made her completely selfish and self serving in the first season, which made if difficult to sympathise with her.

I thought that Sam could have been so much better, but I really didn't rate the actor who played the main character Jake. On the opposite side, I really enjoyed the Japanese cast, some wonderful actors there and a real shame not to be able to enjoy another season with them.

I thought he was just ok, kind of overshadowed by the rest of the cast though. Both characters are running from something, Sam from her religious family and Jake from his sister’s circumstance. Ken Watanabe kind of stole the spotlight. I would like to see him do a remake of Yojimbo.
