Mobile Broadband in West Cork

    Could anybody suggest why my broadband speed varies so much. I am with Eir, (a waste of time trying to talk to them). I have a Huawei B 818 modem and while I can not see the mast, I am not too far from it in a village in West Cork.

    I have measured down load speeds from over 100 mbs to 2 or 3. It is not a contention issue, as the speed changes can happen at any time of the day or night.

    Generally I get between 10/15 download.

    Could an upgrade on modem/Router help.

    I am out of contract.

    Dave

    B818 is superior i think, unless you want to go for 5G, but this does not guaranty anything.

    Speed test over WiFi? Should test over Ethernet cable to eliminate WiFi issue

    Possible your router switching from one mast to another, or from one band to another even from 4G to 3G

    Check stats and compare once on good speed vs bad speed:

    sign in to router web GUI, open another tab, key-in this in address bar and hit enter (adjust IP as needed)

    view-source:http://192.168.1.1/api/device/signal

    What you are looking for is

    <cell_id>xxxxxxxx</cell_id>
    <band>xx</band>
    <enodeb_id>xxxxxxx</enodeb_id>

    note: despite you already announced west Cork, don't post details as this information might identify your approx location, unless you don't care.

    check if you can see your mast(s) on Cellmapper

    B818 have external antenna ports - do you use external antenna? Consider.

    Thanks for the reply smuggler, I tried an external aerial when I first got the router, but it did not make any difference. A couple of test in the last hour, 44 and 57 download on Wifi near the router and 56 on Cabled PC.

    http://192.168.1.1/api/device/signal

    This produces an error message although I have edited to my own Router address.

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <error>
    <code>125002</code>
    <message/>
    </error>

    The mast is not showing on Cellmapper, but is shown here https://siteviewer.comreg.ie/

    As you can see, speeds are more that ok at the moment, (at a time when there should be extra usage), but they can drop at any time.

    Thanks again.

    You MUST be signed in to routers web GUI before issue this line on another tab -> type router IP, enter password, open another tab, enter line

    yes, masts are shown on comreg, but can you confirm that you are connecting to the mast you think you are?

    Sample, only applicable to eir/meteor! Cellmapper vs Comreg eNB ID 3409 correspond (cellmapper incorrect mast positioning due to lack of data)

    The actual tower

    I am connected to the Correct mast, it was until recently listed as a "Meteor" mast, but renamed "Eir" now.

    I got this, but it makes no sense to me.

    If Rapid Broadband is available ( https://rapidbroadband.ie/ ) then it's a great option for West Cork until fibre comes online.

    Input the full line as i have it posted

    What antenna you had?

    Have you changed settings on router to use antenna?

    Were you pointing antenna the right direction?

    Very expensive though. I'm paying 30 Euro a month for unlimited.

    €60 PER MONTH Download Speed - Up to 30Mb

    Another speed test just now was 45 download on Wi-fi in another room. That's better that Rapid, (who do have great customer care). I would just like to know why it drops off at times. You would imagine it slowing down in the evening with people streaming etc., but the figures tonight are very good.

    Thanks for answering

    Yes expensive, but relatively consistent. I often get 40-50Mb in the morning and never below 20Mb in the evening. More than enough for me to WFH and run lots of streaming TV.

    They also have a cheaper €40 per month pack that gives upto 12Mb, which again matches what you said you generally get now (10/15 in your OP)

    Strangely since I posted on board.ie, it has been excellent, just now 70 download on PC and 60 on WiFi.

    You would think there would be a lot of contention in the evenings, but was excellent last night as well. It seems every time I think of changing, I get a run of speed that Rapid can not match.

    Must be the power of Boards.ie.

    There must be a reason why it drops off.

    The national Broadband brought the Fibre to about 200 metres away and just when it was about to reach a cluster of some 70/80 houses, it turned back down a boreen with about 6/7 houses, some of them holiday homes.

    Not sure what to do now, thanks for your interest,

    Contention can be as simple as a bus passing on a local road. Suddenly you've 40 extra users on a single sector.

    Its a mobile network, you're paying a lot less than a fixed connection. Variation can just be normal.

    Ok, but no buses pass between me and the mast and there is not a great population there either. It just that at times when I would expect a little contention, say 7 to 10 in the evening, it can be fine. Today, Sunday, you would think there would be more users streaming etc, but I have 35/ 45 download all day.

    Sometimes, I could be finishing something after midnight, when thigs should be quiet, I might have 5/6 Mbits download,

    Thanks for your reply.
