    Absolut 70cl bottles are currently reduced to £16 a bottle in Sainsburys (and £9 for a 35cl bottle or £25 for a 1 litre bottle) All very reasonable- but the lowest price per ml is the 70cl bottle.

    The entire booze aisles (there are 3 or 4 at the moment- as they're remoddeling the booze section) in Sainsburys Newry was packed with Dubliners- must have been 40-50 people filling trolleys mostly with spirits this afternoon. The car park had a majority of Dublin regs in it too- kind of funny- as the road up was deserted. Everyone seemed to be buying Jameson- which wasn't even on special, don't think any Irish or Scotch was reduced (I got a few bottled of 15 year old Glenfiddich @ £35 the last day I was up- its gone back to £45 a bottle now).

    No great difference in wine prices between Tesco Ireland and Sainsburys NI - maybe a quid here or there, nothing to write home about- the big savings are on spirits and cans of beer/Guinness.

    I had a 6% tasty IPA in witherspoons Cork for 2.45 euro.....twould be hard pressed to find it in supermarkets at that price.....although a fair few rough individuals in the bar.

    With the price of petrol, might the trip North be less attractive?

    Depends- its hardly worth your while to go for shopping- but its good for a day trip for kids (think of the Planetarium at Armagh, or Exploris etc)- and you could pop into Sainsburys or Asda as part of a trip. Its definitely not worth going for groceries/alcohol though.

    Disagree on the alcohol. Big savings still to be made on most alcohol drinks. Especially if using a tescos clubcard.

    Morrisons have an excellent wine sale on this week- any 4 bottles (over a hundred to choose from) for £20.

    Sainsburys hae resurrected their vodka sale- all flavours of Absolut 70cl @ £20 a bottle (good luck finding unflavoured in Newry though- think they've been cleaned out).

    If you're a Sainsburys shopper- use the Monkapk loader to install Smart Shopper and get discounts on your frequently bought items (same as the Tesco clubcard price deal thing- but only for self-scanning with your smart phone).

    I'm not convinced that there is any major benefit to going shopping in NI - prices are uncompetitive (food is probably cheaper here)- yes, you can pick up some cheap booze- but is it worth the trip?
