What constitutes "Low Mileage" these days?

I see so many cars advertised these days that are advertised as "Low Mileage".

For example 2018 with "only" 160,000km or 2016 with "only" 260,000km.

Since when have these mileages been acceptable as "Low Milieage" for cars that are about 8 years old.

Note: i only used the above as examples.

    I have a 2006 with 100,000kms and a 2010 with 92,000kms.

Are these considered "ultra low" mileage?

Many drivers would be doing 20k miles yearly so 3 year old with significantly less than 60k miles could reasonably be deemed low mileage.

Your mileage would be ultra low based on the cars ages.

An 18 car with 160k km is not low mileage.

Id consider low mileage to be less than 10k a year!

Not answering your question but IMO the vast majority of modern cars seem to be fit for pretty much unlimited mileage these days. I'd say pretty much any car you could buy today would do 500k + kms with relative ease.

That being said, i find value falls away pretty steeply if you have a car less than say 5 years old with over 100k kms. Most people buying a car that fresh - age wise generally have an expectation that they'd like a low mileage vehicle. Not saying fresher cars with higher mileages dont sell, but they definitely command less of a premium.

My own yardstick which is probably a bit traditional is 15k kms per year.

I think anything up to 25k a year is "average" mileage these days. Below 15k a year is low mileage

    Miles of KM?

10k km's is very very low. I hardly drove my car last year and still clocked up 10k kms on it.

Yeah I'd say around/below 10k miles per yeah for a petrol. Both of our cars only do about 3k so my perception may be skewed.

I done 12k km in one last year and 26k km in the other. That was with covid and both working from home. Of course if living in a city it would be lower but that was just shops/school drop off/kids activities etc. Doesn't be long counting up

I did 15k km over the last year while still WFH most of the time. Can't remember the last time I did so little mileage. Before Covid I was doing up to 1200km a week.

My 2012 now has 136000km on it (although I did change last year) which is very low If the ads on Carzone and elsewhere are any indication.

Yeara ...The old low milage used to be under 100k miles...the new low milage is under 150k miles. This varies considerably depending on engine size and maintenance history.

The "new" milage anyway is considered in kilometres, every car sold in the EU since 2005 has to be able to be displayed in km

Anyone doing < 10k must be living in Dublin, so more wear and tear on the short journeys. Swings and roundabouts.

I generally buy on service history, condition and price when it comes to cars. In February last year, I bought a 191 registered car (that turned 2 years old on the day I collected it) that had 56k Miles (90k Kms) on it. By any stretch, that would be considered high mileage at 28k miles per year but I got a cracking deal on a car with 3 years warranty remaining and I was not planning on doing a whole lot of travel so figured it would even out over time.

I now have 68k miles on the car (110k Kms) and it drives perfectly as it has been looked after and serviced on the button every time. For a modern machine, as long as it is looked after according to the manufacturer's schedule, there should be no reason to be afraid of the mileage on it. I am sure if I try to trade it in or sell it on that the story will change but for me, I will be keeping it for another few years yet and by that time, it will most likely have "average" mileage on it.

To answer the OP though, for me, low mileage on a 2 year old car would be around the 30k Km mark and I would expect a similar car with higher mileage to be priced accordingly (as mine was). I agree that a 2018 car with 160k Kms on it, is not low mileage and am surprised it would be marketed as such.

Somehow "Low Kilometreage" doesn't sound right.

    But what to use instead?

    I like "Ks"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 138 ✭✭Turbolounge

Yup "k" is grand. On a side note I would assume I'm younger than most people here (21 years old) and none of my friends or anyone under about 40 I work with use miles.

Ahem. My mileage is low but I'm nowhere near Dublin normally.

It used to be 12k miles for petrol and 15k miles for diesels but it all depends.

My 2012 diesel has 93k miles which would be considered low mileage for a private car however as it's a wheelchair accessible vehicle it's actually high mileage when compared to others.
