OLD Attic Ladder was removed and won't go back up properly

Hoping somebody could help here. In a house built around 1970 I guess, I was asked to clear out the attic, and asked a guy I know to help. The attic ladder came with the house, a metal pull down ladder bolted inside with springs. They have never had an issue with it in over 50 years (I was told, and I practically grew up there and never remember an issue either). The guy that was with me thought the ladder was leaning too heavily on the pipes and may cause problems, so he unbolted it and when he couldn't do anything, he put it back the same way. The problem is that it doesn't go back up properly, the top half of the sliding ladder goes up too high hitting the joists, but even when pushed all the way down it does the same. Then it doesn't allow the bottom half to 'catch up' with it to provide the weight at the back required to keep it up. As it is, no matter what I have tried, the attic door hatch comes dropping down by itself unless screwed shut, which was never the case before.

You can see one of the arms that holds the ladder to the floor of the attic has been cutting into the pipe lagging, that's what he thought wasn't good, but that pipe has movement too, and hasn't been affected before. The unattached board with the screws and metal arms, has been reattached/screwed to it's original position, but doesn't attach to anything on the ladder.

Photos are not the best, I will be there again today and will try and get better photos.
