Do you listen to non-irish radio stations/shows? If so, any good recommendations?

if your into rock music UK Station Planet rock play a good mix of classic, New & 80s, 90s, 00's mix. it's a regular day time go to for me. re non music, Talk radio can be entertaining as it's the polar opposite to James o'brien @ that time slot & enjoy getting both persevetives on topics. Times radio is more neutral & worth a go also. in general I find uk equivalents of rte & newstalk cover a lot more broader range of topics rather than Galway cycle lanes or whatever which makes for interesting listening.

I am going through my usual Saturday morning ritual at the moment, listening to 'Carnaby Street' on Manx Radio - essential listening if you like a bit of 60's nostalgia at the weekend. When Chris Williams signs off at 10:30, Alexa will be told to switch to 'Caroline Flashback' for more oldies music.... and the selected year chart countdown at 12:00 with Dave Foster. That's me sorted for Saturday.

Another good radio/music nostalgia station is 'The Radio Ship' .... music and clips of recordings from the offshore pirate stations.

Not radio related, but for some alternative rock .... 'Third Rock Radio' from NASA, is good for new music

At the start of lockdown I read about a channel in Minneapolis called The Current.

Started listening to it, and find it excellent. Great selection of music on it, and discovered many artists you'd rarely hear on radio this side of the Atlantic.

It's publicly funded and only time I found it a hard listen was when they were doing their 'member drives' to raise money to keep it on air. They do a hard sell for about a month and it is talked about a lot.

    JJJ (Triple J) from Australia.

Introduced me to a load of new bands when I lived in Oz. Check out their top 100 from any year and it will give you a flavour of what they play.

Craig Charles funk and soul show Saturday evenings 6-9 is an absolute cracker! As was previously mentioned his midweek afternoon show is good too.

    BBC6

the Triple M network in Australia.

Their Overnight 12 midnight to 5.30 am open line show (think Niall Boylan meets Joe Duffy!!) "The Nightshift", with Luke Bona is entertaining - it gives more of an insight on how crazy life in Australia is...callers are mostly night workers / truckers on the road.

Plays some good rock tracks in-between callers too !

It starts Irish Time 2pm Sunday to Thursday.

I see Andrew Marr has made the break to LBC weekdays 6pm. Could be good, will listen back later. I find James O'Brien a pompous ass who loves listening to his own voice, but there are occasional gems.

OP hasn't said what kind of radio s/he's interested in, music, talk, etc.

Do you use an app for this? I searched for Triple M and got some German thing, but found it on Tune in. Thanks.

Offradio Thessaloniki - for the music.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,182 ✭✭✭Ger Roe

The other two sites mentioned have particular radio nostalgia connections - by having an offshore radio focus. Caroline Flashback is presented in the spirit of the original Radio Caroline service in the 1960's and The Radio Ship includes archive recordings of music programmes presented on several of the other ship and fort based pirate stations of the era (RNI, Radio England, Radio London, Radio City, etc up to Laser 558 in the 1980's).

Third Rock, is a mainly 'new alternative rock' station, with no radio nostalgia connection.

LBC in general is pretty good.

Nick Ferrari on Breakfast would swing to the right, followed by James O'Brien who is so far left he could be broadcasting from the Aran islands.

    Good though.

Try Radio Garden - it is a platform with many stations across the world on it:

It's a fun app I used for a while, but in terms of usability, I gravitated to Replaio Radio in terms of usability, such as being able to manually add a station by entering it's data if it isn't in the database the app is running off, pressing a like button to save details of a track playing so you can hunt it down if you want to buy it, and so on. I liked it enough to pay for it.

FIP Paris worth a mention too. I find it great to have on while working. Nice music, I would struggle to describe/pigeonhole it, which is good! You could hear anything.

the final "nightshift" for Luke Bona on Triple M 5 and a 1/2 hour overnight talk show across Australia is being broadcast at the moment, Austereo owners of Triple M have axed the show after 8 years. Luke only found out yesterday. To be replaced by overnight music.
