Medical Card - Can you change assigned GP?

Hi there a friend with chronic health conditions was removed from their GPs panel as they lived outside of the county. They tried to get a gp in their county but no gp was taking on medical card patients. So they were assigned a gp by the HSE. However this GP has had several court cases, including falsifying patients files. The are also vocally anti abortion and won’t provide those services. My friend is pro choice and needs a gp they can depend on and does not want to go to this doctor. They asked the medical card unit to be reassigned but they said no she must stay with this GP for 6months. Does anyone have expert of a situation like this and is there any recourse of action to be reassigned?

Grateful for any help as the person is very upset.

They could appeal the HSE's refusal decision. The HSE has decided that GP is fit to treat GMS patients.

Otherwise there is nothing much they can do unless she moves address or goes private for the next 6 months and then attempt to change again.

Unless she moves county again , even when the 6 months are up, I can’t see the HSE facilitating another switch on the basis that are set out here.

Realistically, if they allowed every patient who doesn’t like their GP to move because they’re “very upset” then total chaos would break out, (as if it wasn’t bad enough already). The paperwork would be unmanageable.

Same with local authorities and housing. The amount of tenants who “need a fresh start somewhere else” more or less every 3 years is staggering.
