Hi there, just looking for some advice. I am thinking of buying a 2015 Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC. I have test drove one and I really like how it drives, plenty of power, holds corners well. I've never owned a Honda before and was wondering how good their diesel engines are reliability wise. I commute 150km per day so reliability is key for me. I am coming from a Toyota 1.4D-4D which has been flawless over the past 5 years. Thank you.

Those 1.6 diesels are very reliable. You’re talking about the very last of the 2011 onwards model.

Thank you. I like this model but think the newest one looks even better. Am I right in saying that the newest model then came out in 2017 or 2018? I assume they use the exact same 1.6 unit?

Yes, the newer one came out in 2017, same diesel engine carried over.

The diesels didn’t come til 2018 if I remember right, they were all petrols from 2016.

Yeah from looking online it seems that the mk10 diesel came out in 2018. But they were still selling mk9 diesels up to 2017.

It originally had a 2.2l Diesel but the 1.6 came out about 2012/13. I own a 2013 1.6 diesel Civic for 3 years now and the engine has never given me a second of bother. Getting roughly 600kms out of 40 litres of diesel which is down a bit but still pretty good return. Sailed through it's NCT in January. It's definitely more of a motorway cruiser then a backroad runabout. What I love most about it is on mornings where yellow and orange wind warnings are in place, as you see various trucks, vans and SUVs buffeted about, the Civic just slices though the wind, stable as rails. Anyway. I think they're a great car.

    This too shall pass.

    I had a 141 1.6 diesel.

Had 160 000 km on the clock when I traded it in Never had any problems.

I would regularly get 60+ miles per gallon

And if driven on motorway at 100km/ hour

Would show 3.9 litres / 100 km 73 miles per gallon.

It was moved on to a Honda dealer who has it 4 months now and is looking for silly money for it!

The one I'm looking at is a 151 facelift model 1.6 diesel with 120,000 km on the clock. They are looking for €15k though I may get a small bit of a discount. The Toyota I have at the moment has 350,000km on the clock but the gearbox is on the way out. Never any trouble otherwise though. Trying to stick with reliable Japanese brands because of my high mileage.

Indeed. Did a trip clock measure of my last fill and the 40l fill is actually giving me around 750km of range give or take.

    This too shall pass.
