In the process of buying a 2 yr old 3 series. Its had 1 service already with Joe Duffy. I'm thinking of getting the garage I'm buying from not to service it, knock off a few pound and bring it to Joe Duffy for its 2nd service and get the full works. Just to keep a consistent paper trail wth 1 dealer not that that will give you much goodwill. I'd be very distrusting of main dealers especially around Dublin as I've seen horror stories of different manufacturers charging people for filter changes and not even changing them. Thinking of waiting go independent after the 3 yrs is up just to avoid any warranty hassles.

Is it true you can't get a BMW serviced prematurely until the service light comes on. Also is it true you can't say do the fuel and air filter earlier than the computer prompts you. I'm all for preventative maintenance. What BMW recommend intervals for X and Y should be is often different to reality (Like all manufacturers) First time going for an auto so what is the recommended gearbox service interval? 2 yr old too early.

Any BMW specialists in the Monaghan/Cavan/Louth area. Would go north but would rather wait til after the 3 yr warranty is up.

Every 100k km for the gearbox according to ZF.

BMW will say it will never need to be done though.

Not sure about what the computer does or doesn't let you do in terms of servicing but regardless of oil intervals (which I thought was 30k on the newer diesels) 10-15k kms is what I'd be doing it at.

I think theres a place in Navan, Pro Fix or something like that.

Are you buying from a BMW main dealer?

If not, why is a 2yo car not within the dealer network?

To be honest, BMW main dealer basic servicing is not expensive (additional work is of course), but I often see indy garages advertising more expensive basic services. I think you'd be mad to go anywhere but a dealer for the first 5-6 years IMO. You'll retain far more value that way. Get consumables like brakes, etc. done in advance of the BMW service, and they'll mark them as OK come service time.

(For brakes, the car will warn on both mileage and pad wear sensors and trigger a notification to have them done, even if you do it yourself.)

Thanks, yea I thought I read somewhere before that the pads will warn you when need changed but wasn't sure if it lets it run so low that the disks then need done also. Its an ex lease car and one of the dealers owned by the leasing company is retailing it as its mint. I agreed to bring it for a bmw service in a few 1000km when needed and I worked the deal that I'm getting a set of Michelin run flats in lieu...dealer themselves even said it was the right thing to do in order to ensure the warranty is water tight.

You won’t go wrong with the G20, great car and they hold their value. Premium car.

I get mine done every 15k km at a main dealer. They never grumble about it being early. I have had another dealer grumble about it and refuse to record it in the idrive on my wife’s old car after the money had been taken alright.

Main dealer servicing is actually coming in cheaper than a local specialist for me.

Fair enough about distrusting dealers but that doesn’t mean an Indy is automatically better. Good and bad of both around. I personally wouldn’t buy one without a dealer history. Some independents won’t be able to update the idrive history too.
