Bought a 3060ti build from pc specialist in summer and was very happy with their service. this is my current build

Case ; Corsair 175r rbg mid tower

    cpu; amd ryzen 3600x

    Motherboard; Asus prime b450

Ram ; 16 gb corsair vengance

    Gpu ;3060 ti

    ssd; Intel 1tb 670p

Power supply; corsair 650w cv series cv-650

    cooling ; standard amd cpu

thermal paste ; standard thermal paste.

I'm thinking about upgrading my build to 3090 & adding a second ssd . I was onto PC specialist to do it using components from current build. first build they sent me was only adding a corsair 850w rmx ultra quiet power supply and the ssd was a samsung 870 1tb.

the second build was upgrading the case to corsair 500d airflow, cpu to 3700x,motherboard to asus strix b550-f, power supply to corsair 850w rmx & cooling to pcs 100 v3 frost flow series.

I'm Just wondering do i even need to upgrade my case and should i really be upgrading my cpu to something more powerful then the 3700x??? also my current build can be very noisy so would not mind a quieter build! I'm new to pc gaming really so id appreciate advice on upgrading my build to one for a 3900!or maybe i should wait for the 3090ti.

    My instinctive response: don't.

I've had a 3090 for 18 months now, getting one just after launch. Yes, they're very powerful, and very expensive, both then and even more so now.

But that comes at a cost in power and cooling requirements. Even a plain stock one will eat 350W under load. A 3090Ti will be even worse than that, with reports placing that at 450 to 480W.

All of this has knock on effects and requirements. Getting rid of that heat means more airflow to shift it. So either you run your current fans faster and louder, or move to a bigger case. Or watercooling it, which also likely warrant a larger case and extra expense.

The second suggested build does somewhat address some of that.

But none of it addresses that a 3900X will bottleneck the 3090 in many games (it can vary quite a bit depending on the game, so you may need google for results for your preferred game and resolution). So after all that improved cooling and power considerations, you may not get full use out of it.

You've never mentioned what the intended game to run this with is. But either way, trying to add a 3090 will produce a lop sided machine, more noise, a lot of expense, only to possibly not really get the full benefit from it.

ok thanks for the reply . so i would have to basically go with that second build they suggested and switch the cpu to a more powerful one ?

for gaming a 3090 is complete overkill, you'd be getting literally 1-2 FPS difference compared to a 3080ti or even a 3080. Unless you're going to be doing rendering and other stuff 95% of people don't do on a computer. Regardless you'd need a super beefy PSU for a 3090, 1000w+ and gold definitely. But yeah don't get a 3090, it's a complete waste of money. The 3090 and 3090ti are literally not meant for gaming. As for CPU bottleneck, I think you'd be okay with a 3600x for the time being even if you upgraded your card. The one thing I don't understand is why are you upgrading. Your build should be able to run literally any AAA game out there at 60fps unless you're trying to run Cyberpunk at ultra.

    i didn't realize that thanks . i will just go for a build around a 3080 ti !

ya i didn't realize how powerful my build was until i sent back my series x for repair and started using the pc loads . i'm running dying light 2 on max RT with dlss performance on and getting 70-100 fps even with all time RT at max settings . the reason i wanted to upgrade was just to have the best set up i could have . now that you mention cyberpunk id like play it again played ps4 version on ps5 was painful
