Is it worth respraying car?

We have an old 2003 Jaguar X type in the family. It has 350km on it,the body work is in bad shape. We've had it 9 years, bought for €3k as it needed some work at the time. Its not our primary vehicle and We've been meaning to upgrade for the last 3 or 4 years.

Here's the thing, the car is lovely inside,is lovely to drive, mechanically sound (as far as we know) highly specced and has never let us down,it's also just passed the NCT.

The car belongs to the Mrs who is mostly working from home now,the car has sentimental value to us and I'm thinking of putting some money into it.An older gent who does amazing body work has agreed to respray the car for a €1000,he's a master and that's surely a bargain.

It's a bit of a risk as any car that age can just give up the ghost but I'm wondering what fellow boardies think?

    To sum up,

Upgrading in the current market makes no sense, can we make our older, high spec barge nice looking and hang onto it

I would be of the view to go for it. You seem very confident he will do a top job.

It sounds like a car you are going to keep for sentimental reasons and it isn't a 03 Corsa with a worn interior so there is real value in keeping it as well maintained as possible.

There is little value in the car market and 1,000 is relatively small money.

You summed it up yourself nicely.

Can't argue with any of that....GO FOR IT.......i have a 1973 land rover defender that I adore in the shed......if Mrs Mc Carthy had any idea how much I've spent on that ol beauty over the last decade.....phew/ best not to think that way😅

It won't be a decent paint job for €1k, unless he's literally charging for materials and no labour.

If you've a grand burning a hole in your pocket I'd certainly go for it.

You know it's illegal to ask this sort of advice and not put up before and after pics? 😎

    Seems very very cheap though!

The guy has been doing it for 50 years, semi retired, only takes on jobs for friends at this stage.I just got my own car back from him last week, amazing job, charged me €200,probably should be nearer double.

Depends on how bad the bodywork is.

Is there a lot of rust or is just a few dings and faded paint?

As above 1k sounds a bargain but it's not if he just going to paint over unsound metal.

Yes,for sure, will put up pics if we go for it.

Mrs is pushing to do it (which is unusual I suppose!)

I say go for it. Am I the only one who keeps an eye out for well minded cars on the road. I had an older toyota resprayed after a tip..and get a lot of satisfaction from how well it looks.

Lol! Are you going to go with something radical?

This is the kind of advise I'm looking for.

Some work had to be done last year on the sills to pass NCT,there is some rust.I don't know how bad it is really as I don't know much about it.The Mrs brought it off and got it sorted at her local garage.

The respray guy has only had a very quick look at it and wouldn't take it on if there were major rust issues I believe.

If possible get it up on a lift or over a pit so the respray guy can get a good look at it.

It's probably not too bad if it got through the NCT

If he is 50 years at cars go with his advice.

Try not to let your heart rule your head but it does sound like a nice car.

"The respray guy has only had a very quick look at it and wouldn't take it on if there were major rust issues I believe."

I have visions of that mad priest in father Ted kicking the shite out of the wheel arch and shouting "SHODDY WORKMANSHIP"!
