Mercedes CLA 180 (First Generation C117)

Herself is looking at 2014-2016 Mercedes CLA. She'll be doing low mileage for a year but then will be doing higher mileage the year after - so could go with a petrol maybe. I know myself I'd want more horsepower than the 1.6 engine offers but she's happy with it and it's within budget.

Main query is about any common issues that crop up with these? I'm not finding anything overly common like the BMW N47 engine timing chain issues or the VAG TDI 2.0 oil pump drive shaft issues.

180 or 180d? I had an A Class 180d and the engine ruined the car for me. Doesn’t live up to the Mercedes badge. For someone not really interested in cars it will probably be okay

Yeah the 107hp in the 180D is a shocker personally but she like the look of the car and isn't too concerned with it's pace. I had a 105hp Superb once and it was dreadful driving...

At least the petrol 180 has 120hp which is still not much really...

It wasn’t so much the power for me but the noise it made and how unrefined it was. Mine was automatic so I can only imagine its worse as a manual.

I reckon the petrol variant is much nicer and as you say it has a bit of extra power.

Audi have been getting away with doing similar for decades and it doesn't seem to ruffle as many feathers.

BMW were at it with Mini's for a good while too. Didn't they have Peugeot engines in their early models?
