Pup tax repayment , is this correct?

So I’m wondering can someone explain the pup tax we have to repay this year. I don’t know much about tax but I’m currently getting taxed over 80 euro the last 3 weeks. Which is an increase of 50 to 60 euro every week for me. Seemingly my tax credits have been reduced by 3120 so I have 280 for the year I think. I contacted revenue and they explained it’s to do with the pup payment I received so my tax credits have been reduced to pay it. I thought they would be reduced by a small amount but it seems kind of high? Im not in a high paying job so 80 euro a week in tax is a big hit to me. Just wondering if this is correct or if there’s anything I can do as I’m stressing about money now, thanks

Is the tax on PUP received being collected all in one year? (I thought it was being spread over 4 yrs?)

If so ask Revenue to spread the repayment over a longer period as its causing hardship

Pup on its own would not attract tax (or at worst a tiny amount) as it was set at €18200 maximum.

So you most likely worked at some point in the year and as pup and earnings were not joined up you probably got totally tax free earnings from your employer where in the normal course of things you would have paid some tax weekly.

Pup (and most social welfare payments) are taxable. But as most are under the tax free allowance, no tax is due if that was your only income.

I was on the pup payment for about 3 months at the start of last year and signed off it when my workplace reopened,

It looks like revenue still think you are receiving a social welfare payment this year. You should call them or contact them though my account and clarify that you are not

Have you done a tax return for 2021 on Revenue.ie through MyAccount? You should have received P21 after that with a figure you owe to the Revenue. Once done, you can contact Revenue and ask to split that into a longer period of time and it would be collected through your payslip.

Since 2021 pup payments were to be taxed during 2021, something has gone wrong if it's impacting your 2022 credits and rate band. You should be able to log into your revenue MyAccount and see if there are any DSP payments on file for you for 2022 that shouldn't be there. You can also look at your 2022 tax credit cert in your documents section to see what's impacting them.

As you've just filed your 2021 return, did you check that the amount of pup on file for you for 2021 was correct before submitting?

Hi yes I checked the pup amount for 2021 and it looked like the correct amount. I just had a look at my tax certificate and it says there’s a dsp pup payment reducing it. So there does seem to be a pup payment on file, I’m so confused by this, when I contacted revenue they said it’s due to me receiving the pup payment ? I have emailed back to say I’m not receiving a pup payment.

How much in PUP did you receive in total. A quick back of a newspaper calculation gives €4,550 for 3 months (can't remember what the PUP at the time was, so going with €350 per week). Adding €14,400 that you earned gives a total income of just €18,950 for the 2021 tax year.

On that, you would only be paying €490 on PAYE, €242 on PRSI and €199 on USC, giving a grand total of €930 tax owed for 2021.

However, according to revenue, PUP was taxed in real-time for 2021 (it was 2020 that it was allowed accumulate and brought forward). So A), I can't see how you would owe any tax on it this year, and B) it would be very little - not the €50-€60 weekly increase you are seeing.

Get a statement from DSP stating when the pup payment stopped and how much it was. Send that to Revenue to fix the issue.

It was about 5 thousand ish, I think I was on pup for about 3 and half months. So it looks correct. I don’t understand it either so I’m not sure what to do it doesn’t seem correct I’m taxed that much but revenue are telling me it’s the pup payment, I’ve tried ringing them but their line is always too busy. I just need to get it sorted because I can’t afford to lose that much every week and it’s been 3 weeks now
