Moving into new rental - question around prepay gas

    Hello,

We are moving into a new house on Monday and were organising transferring utilities into our name and were told it's prepay gas.

The people we are dealing with to transfer utilities aren't the most helpful and keep telling us they'll call back with more info etc. and we're worried they won't transfer the utilities in time for us moving in.

Just wondering if anyone has experience with this and if we will be without gas when we move in if it's not transferred in time?

We are also looking to move to bill pay but have been informed it would be 200€ to remove the meter. Is this usual and does anyone know a way around it?

    Thanks!

Check with your new landlord if you are allowed to remove the key meter. Gas Networks do charge around €200 to remove the meter. This can take a few weeks to do.

If it is ‘prepay power’ type meter you contact them directly. There is no charge to remove the prepay meter but you may have to demand it to be removed. There are a few posts on this site explaining the process.

In the short term contact the energy supplier first and say you are moving in and start a new account. There could be debt left on the old card from the previous tenant and you will be paying off their debt. The energy supplier will tell you how to activate/ reset the meter.

The day you move in buy a payment card from the local shop and activate the card by putting it into the meter which is about 5 euros or so and then go back to the shop and load money onto the card.

if you have an account already in your current property keep your account handy and you can move that to your new home. You will not need to give a deposit to the energy company as you already have an account with them and payment history.
