Kitchen table issue, opinion welcome

Bought a wooden kitchen table last june/july.

There was no care advice given with the table when it was delivered, it has a finish on it so it doesnt need to be waxed/oiled.

Over christmas we put two fabric runners on the table for decoration.

When we took them off (and another coaster) we could see a marked discolourisation/fading in the areas that were uncovered.

We took the extension part of the table out and that confirmed the difference seen on the main table.

Shop sent out an 'independent' furniture company that they use, said 'no manufacturing fault' 'discolourisation evident possibly caused by sun or unkown reason'

Discolourisation is also very obvious in the photos supplied in the independent company report.

The shop are now saying 'accidental damage in the home by sun'

The last table we had 20 years in the same position with no issues.

Just wondering peoples thoughts, am I being fobbed off?

Would it be reasonable for a table to not react to 6 months use, should I have kept it in the dark?

    hi op

could you pay someone for a report yourself? see if they agree with or contradict the shop. Either way I would personally take a small claims court action against the shop stating product was not of merchantable quality.

i would start this by asking shop in writing to resolve the issue setting out that you dont accept discolourisation is your fault and that the table was only used as it was designed, and no warning or special care instructions were given to you, when purchased. give them 4 weeks to respong asking for a remedy EG repair replace refund.

that would be a good time to provide your own report from a professional carpenter etc. but i would do it anyway even if you choose not to get one.

Thanks, I've already asked for a remedy, and they have washed their hands of it.

I'll probably get someone to have a look at it to see whats going on.

"Either way I would personally take a small claims court action against the shop stating product was not of merchantable quality."

So Op does not know what caused the problem but the recommendation is to make a claim?????

Op, in the first instance a second opinion should be obtained from a competent person. Then decide on a course of action.

Just to update, I got a second opinion, who said that the original assessment was very one-sided and that there was an issue with the table.

I initiated a claim with the SCC, and the company immediately agreed to refund table cost plus delivery.

Imagine selling someone a kitchen table that they cant put beside a window. You should name and shame.

Things like this happen in shops etc, I'm mostly annoyed that, when presented with the evidence of the obvious issue, they said 'no manufacturing fault' and then did a 180 and refunded me without further thought as soon as the SCC court letter arrived, they had no idea I had got a second opinion.

Regarding name and shame, not sure what it achieves, I know I won't be back to them for anything.
