Graduate Roundabout (Glenageary)

    Hi guys,

I am an American in Ireland who is learning to drive. I have had to rely on friends and co-workers sponsoring me while I practice. I am getting conflicting advice on a roundabout that seems to come up on routes a lot in Dun L. I read on boards lots of people got a Grade 3 here!

It is the Graduate Roundabout in Glenageary. When emerging from Rochestown Avenue there are two lanes. One left, one right. I am asking about heading 'straight on' or second exit up toward the Avonedale Road.

My instructor suggested I go into the right hand lane for this, which seems to go against what I know about going 'straight head.' I think the logic is that the exit is past 12 o' clock, although to me it seems somewhat ambiguous.

But my sponsors all told me to go in the left lane and I noticed a lot of cars do this too.

So I'm confused and worried I'll mess it up. Hopefully someone here can settle it for me!

    Hi,

I think you should stay left. Stay left and exit into the left lane. To me looks like it is actually slightly before twelve-o-clock. If you enter in the right lane you must make two lane changes. And in the test you want to keep your driving as straightforward and simple as possible -no unnecessary lane changes.

Re your instructor. He might know something that is not apparent. Ask him to explain why he treats it as a right turn. He must be able give you a rational explanation.

Thanks! I am finished my EDL lessons and since then not heard from the instructor. I will send a message and see what he says, but feel like he might not respond.

    Hi

You should use the left lane on this roundabout when entering from Rochestown avenue and exiting to avondale Road

You should also make sure you keep well left as often drivers cross into right lane

If you use right lane you will fine yourself in bother exiting as nobody else does this

Thanks Rach! I have noticed the division of lines is super tight there!

    Hey Guys,

How about the reverse ? when coming from Avonedale Road to Rochestown Avenue.

There are 2 lanes and the lane in the left is marked as "for the traffic going to the left in the roundabout" and right lane has no marking. which lane we should take ?

The right lane on approach as the left lane is dedicated for the first exit. However, be prepared for motorists using the left lane and not taking the first exit.
