    Hi Boardies

Looking to upgrade my 2010 Passat CC. I come from previously owning an 07 525d and an 03 525i. I seriously love 5ers but moved to the CC to save some money to get a house. Now that I got that, looking to move up a bit. Not sure if doing the 520d is a good thing or should I continue with more "mainstream" brands and move up in years a bit more. Any recommendations from the cars listed?

    Budget is 10k

    Thanks in advance

2012 puts you right in the middle of 520d with the timing chain problem so you need to be very careful of what your buying given these are 10 year old cars now.

I'd rule out the Mazda6 diesel also are they are just a disaster of an engine. just too risky imo to take a chance on finding a lucky one that might not give trouble. Hyundai i40 wouldn't even be on this list, other than not being a very nice car they are not exactly reliable either, very weak clutches and gearbox in them.

That leaves the Mondeo and Passat. Not sure your budget will get you into a newer model of either now as used car prices have gone through the roof. That leaves you looking at models that were launched back in the mid 2000s with the Passat being very similar to your current CC. 1.6 engine would be best avoided i both.

A Volvo S80 like below is worth a look at if you want something a bit more premium yet comfortable:
