Business Phone (Sole Trader)

Firstly, I've tried searching but with no luck so apologies if this has been asked before.

Hopefully an easy question, I'm in the process of registering for VAT. I'm also due an upgrade on my phone which is mainly used for business. Its currently a personal plan - can I upgrade and to another personal plan and still claim the VAT back? Or will I need to change my plan to a business one (which is more expensive) if I wish to claim back VAT on the montly bill?

Same question for using it as a tax deductible expense from my business (sole trader) - does it need to be a business plan?

    Thanks in advance

If the phone bill is in your name and its the same name as your sole trade then I'd see no issue with it being included as a business expense and claiming back the VAT. However if you also use the phone for personal use then you should discount a portion of the business expense claim.

Also worth considering if the phone upgrade is a capital allowance, and should be written off at 12.5% for 8 years (what's the cost of the upgrade?)
