Radio Show Name Bias

Almost every radio show presented by both a female and male presenter in Ireland the male name is always billed first in the show name and promotion.

Seems like a bit of unconscious bias.

A notable exception goes to 98FM

    Darren & Demi -Cork 96FM

Colm & Lucy - Classic Hits

    Rob & Laura- East Coast

    Cooper & Kayte- iRadio

    Dave & Fionnuala - iRadio

Mark Whelan & Catriona Tierney- Live 95FM

Newstalk Breakfast (Shane Coleman and Ciara Kelly have all the stories- from website)

Kevin Blessing & Margaret Carr Flynn- OceanFM

    Aidan & Venetia- Q102

Andrew Morrissey & Elaine Kinsella- Radio Kerry

Ed & Valerie - Spin South West

    Vinny & Aoibhin- WLR

    Chris & Ciara- 2FM

    Rebecca & Brendan - 98FM

"2FM Breakfast with Doireann, Donnacha and Carl"

In the case of the iRadio shows the girls are actually the news readers. Kayte until 12, Fionnuala from lunch to 6pm with pre recorded entertainment slots for the rest of the night. Cooper and Dave are the breakfast and drive presenters respectively, Fionnuala and Kayte are just contributors.

    This too shall pass.

This reminds me of a similar TV news observation, when the male reader in a M/F co-present team, always sat on the left (from viewer perspective), as an apparent implication of seniority. The left seat usually takes the lead on intro headlines and first story. It was remarked on after the death of Keelin Shanley (RIP) when the previously promoted all female approach was changed back to a M/F presentation and Caitroina Perry was then sat on the right.

It seemed to lead to some change, because I have seen male readers take the right hand seat in a M/F team, since.

I always thought the shorter name goes first as it tends to roll off the tongue.

For some of them like Darren and Demi, they’ve got the same amount of syllables so Demi and Daren would sound just as well.

“Brendan and Rebecca” wouldn’t work though. You need to say Rebecca’s name first as it’s so long and the “ca” in Rebecca flows into the “and” making it less clunky to say.

If it was “Brendan and Rebecca,” the way Brendan ends on “an” only to go into the word “and” slows you down saying it and it just doesn’t sound as nice.

Good God, when this burning issue is solved what will be the next totally trivial complaint about women in the media?

I am sure there are more urgent issues facing women.

    Quick question.

    Who cares?
